William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews gloucestercitynews.net graphic files **CHEER** – We often discuss the lack of community pride in Gloucester City, but we have not acknowledged the two individuals who consistently contribute to the community, such as Patty Heiser and Joyce Calzonetti. Recently, at Market and Baynes Avenue, we witnessed Patty picking up litter while pushing a baby carriage. A young child was walking alongside her, holding onto the carriage as she collected trash in a plastic bag. Several years ago, we were driving into Gloucester City from Brooklawn early on a Saturday morning when we spotted Joyce Calzonetti collecting litter and placing it in a bag in the trunk of her car. When we stopped to ask Joyce why she was spending her time picking up trash, she simply shrugged and replied, "It's just something I do." Today Joyce is active in the Gloucester City Tree Commission and...

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (MARCH 27, 2025)(CNBNews)-Notice the way the worker in the photo is standing. As I watched this crew I almost passed out from the strong smell of asphalt. I don't know how these workers do that job every day. They deserve every dollar they make and then some. We need oxygen to survive. Sometimes the amount of oxygen in the blood falls too low for the body to function well. Asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the flu, and heart disease are among the health conditions that can cause oxygen levels to drop. Being at higher altitudes, where the amount of oxygen in the air can be less than at sea level, can be another factor that can cause oxygen levels to drop. One way to monitor the level of oxygen in the blood is by using a device called a pulse oximeter, or pulse ox. A pulse oximeter can estimate the amount of oxygen in the blood without having to draw a blood sample. What is a pulse oximeter? A pulse oximeter is a device that is usually clipped on a fingertip and uses light beams to estimate a person’s blood oxygen level (oxygen saturation) and...

On Monday, March 24, the Assembly passed several gun control bills. Most of the bills addressed issues which are already illegal under both state and federal law. It is an election year in New Jersey, and action on this package of bills appears to be more about politics than public safety. The votes largely followed party lines, with Republicans opposing and Democrats supporting the legislation—except for Democratic Assembly members David Bailey (D-3) and Heather Simmons (D-3), who voted against it, and Republican Assembly members Nancy Munoz (D-21) and Michele Matsikoudis (D-21), who voted in favor. The following bills will now be transmitted to the Senate for further consideration. A.4974 prescribing penalties for the sale and possession of “machine gun conversion devices.” Such devices are already banned at both the state and federal level. There has never been an explanation why this bill is necessary. Given that New Jersey’s definition would...

Athletes participating in high-impact sports like rugby put tremendous stress on their bodies, often leading to chronic pain, inflammation, and slow recovery times. Traditional pain relief methods, like opioids or NSAIDs, often come with side effects or risks of dependency; many athletes have turned to cannabidiol (CBD) as a natural alternative for managing pain and improving recovery; its research backing up athlete testimonials shows CBD's promise as a pain-reliever without psychoactive side effects of THC. Below, we discuss how CBD works, its advantages for athletes, and the scientific reasons underlying its pain-relief properties. How CBD Works in the Body CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that help regulate pain, inflammation, mood, and sleep. Unlike THC, CBD doesn't cause an immediate "high," instead supporting its balance by helping keep inflammation at bay and overactive pain signals at bay. When athletes experience muscle soreness or joint pain,...

By Slim Randles | CNBNews Contributor Boy, I sure do love cowboy music. Now I don’t mean stuff like “Grandma Tied Me Up With Her Scarf So I Can’t Go To My Sweetie’s House Tonight.” Nope. Well, to be completely honest, there is a place for that, too. But to achieve the right mood for that kinda music, you must first 1. Prepare your taste buds with a couple of jiggers of Old Overcoat, 2. Write home and lie about how much money you make. And of course 3. Borrow your buddy’s shooting ear muffs and try them out to see that he wasn’t cheated by buying them. No, I mean cowboy music. Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry, Steve Cormier and a bunch more. These are the true songs of the campfires under starry skies. But there are some of us not blessed with the correct tonsils...

Bills sponsored by Assembly Democrats address gaps in domestic violence laws and public awareness (TRENTON) – The New Jersey General Assembly today advanced several bills designed to protect victims of domestic violence, while also raising awareness in communities. “These bills are another way to support domestic violence victims, whether it's helping them regain control of their phones—an essential communication tool often manipulated by abusers— or making sure that individuals who violate final restraining orders face real consequences,” said Assemblywoman Ellen Park (D-Bergen), Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, which advanced these bills earlier this month. “Legislation like this is crucial because it reassures the individuals that have experienced domestic violence that they are not alone, and that there is help and compassion within reach.” The latest reports from 2020 reveal a 6% increase in domestic violence offenses from the previous year, with over 63,000 cases reported.
