42Freeway.com: A chat with Gloucester Township Mayor, Dave Mayer

42Freeway.com does its first featured interview and its with Gloucester Township Mayor, Dave Mayer. Gloucester Twp is huge... with the population approaching 70,000 it is SIX times the size of Bellmawr and really is more like several districts than one town. The big news in Gloucester Twp right now is the new Premium Outlet Mall going in off of 42, sandwiched between the Black Horse Pike. It will sit right at the newer College Drive exit of the 42 Freeway, and only a mile from our new home in Deptford. Mr Mayer and I also discuss several other retail districts including Cross-Keys and Blackwood-Clementon Rd. Meandering Mark's 42Freeway.com - New Retail/Commerce site for the towns of Rt 42

So we moved. No longer residents of Bellmawr after being a resident my entire life. But we're still close by. More about that in a minute. I also started a new blog site called 42Freeway.com In short, 42Freeway.com is a commerce blog featuring stories on new retail developments, roadway improvements, and interesting area events all with the goal to inform and promote the towns along Rt 42. No sports, no politics (unless it specifically relates to a commerce story) Focusing on the towns of Bellmawr, Deptford, Gloucester Township, Washington Township, Winslow Township and Monroe Township... they really are all connected by one main artery, Rt 42 (and the AC Expressway). Let's face it, the road construction in Bellmawr affects them all. The new houses at... Read more →

Google Street View Maps now covers all of our towns; Bellmawr, Gloucester City and more

Getting out of her car on Google Street View Maps Meandering with Mark Matthews CNBNews Bellmawr, the surrounding towns... well basically all of South Jersey... now seem to be covered by Google Street View Maps. If you aren't familiar, Google Street View is an add-on feature to their popular map website, which allows you to see images taken along the street. Google has been driving specially outfitted cars around the world to take pictures of the streets, and then they stitch them together so that you can virtually drive down the streets. Brooklawn Iconic Eateries Weber's and the Brooklawn Diner Happenings

Meandering With Mark Matthews BROOKLAWN NJ (May 10, 2014)--Two well known Brooklawn eateries have significant changes coming, one for the better and the other... well only time will tell. First up is Weber's Drive-in. The well known drive-in eatery has been open since when my parents were kids. Over the years they've had trampolines, a skateboard park (please someone contact me with pics or video!), and they've always seem to have had minature golf courses. Well on June 18th, the Brooklawn Weber's Drive-in is up for auction! There are no details in the listing as to the reasoning for the auction, but it does show that it includes the building, golf courses, 6 acres of land, and there is additional land available for purchase. Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Epic Jeff Gordon Prank Video will make you laugh.

How about a little fun, and probably a smile, on this 6 degree morning? Nascar driver Jeff Gordon and Pepsi Max team up to pull a hilarious prank on an automotive journalist from the Jalopnik website. This is actually Jeff's second prank video. The first hit viral success last year hitting 42 million views, and many thought the video was fake (staged). My guess is this new version will also meet with the same "viral" success. Web automotive journalist Travis Okulski was one of the first to say that while the first Test Drive video was fun and entertaining, Jeff Gordon was not driving the car. So for the second Test Drive video, a new plan was hatched... to put the doubting journalist Travis into... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Local eateries Marlene Mangia Bene and Villaris Lakeside featured at Sam's Club

On a recent visit to Sam's Club in Deptford NJ, I stumbled on to a new promotion they are running... geared to helping out select area business and the two featured currently are Marlene Mangia Bene in Woodbury and Villari's Lakeside in Sicklerville. Since before the holidays, Sam's Club has been promoting national casual eating places such as UNO's and Don Pablos, by selling discounted gift cards in the store. My wife and I are big UNO's fans and have purchased several of them (Gluten Free products and Beer!) So this past Sunday I was in Sam's Club and was surprised to see that in the mix of large displays of discount cards, were the two local restaurants! They must have just put them out... Read more →

Cape May features prominently in the video, which also includes Wildwood, Island State Park, Seaside Heights and other locations. Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Green Olive enters a crowded market, Wonder Bread Gone

By Mark Matthews cnbnews.net I haven't posted in a while. Summer has been very busy for us, and we recently got back from a short 4 night trip to Disney World (which is just about the right amount of time). This is a ramnbling post. We have a wedding tonight, and making the last minute trip to the dry cleaners I noticed a few things around town I thought I'd write about... Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: A bunch of Turkeys in Bellmawr | cnbnews.net

(cnbnews.net)--Over the last 4 or 5 years, Cleary's Notebook has had several stories on the wild turkey population that has been taking over Gloucester, Brooklawn and other areas... and earlier in the year GCN reporter Anne Forline published an in depth article on the local turkeys. So how about one last photo from today of a young turkey family in Bellmawr along McClelland Ave? The adult and 5 young chicks have become regulars in the neighborhood. They've seemed to have found a safe home in a nearby natural area behind the homes which is basically untouched by humans. I noticed a Bellmawr group back in 2008 over at New St Mary's Cemetary on Browning Road, and about a year or so ago we started seeing... Read more →

The new location will be called Lamp Post Diner, and a family restaurant is a primary focus. Update: I spoke to Paul at the Metro Diner today (7/27/2013) to clarify the ownership of the new Blackwood location. Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: A Supreme Court battleground is gone. Mt Ephraim's Fantasy Showbar.

By Mark Matthews Mt Ephraim NJ - This week the Fantasy Showbar building was demolished to make room for a new Taco Bell. Even if you've never set foot in the building, everyone in the area knew of the Fantasy Showbar. Its large and somewhat graphically worded front roadside sign made it very clear what was going on inside. Some, like me, remember when it was originally a Thom McCann shoe store. But what many don't realize, is it was also the battleground for a legal case that made its way to the Supreme Court in 1981. Considering only about 80 cases are heard by the Supreme Court, and another 50 are decided without hearing arguments... it's amazing that this small town case made it... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Browning Road Sidewalk Improvements | cnbnews.net

Lighting has been installed and is operational, and the town is already proudly displaying banners from the recently installed vintage styled lamp posts. The improvements include new sidewalks, benches, waste recepticles, lamp posts, grass, plants, and attractive retaining walls where the ground rises up higher than the sidewalks. The work and craftsmanship is of very high quality, which can be seen in the the block walls, sidewalk... the whole project. Plus the lamp fixtures have that vintage 1800s small town look. The top of the lamps even have a "B" monogram! The sidewalk runs the length of the cemetary, and the lighting and banners continue down to... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Bellmawr, do we want fireworks again?

BY MARK MATTHEWS CNBNEWS.NET Updated July 7th at end of story I remember decades ago, going up to the Bellmawr recreation center to watch the fireworks. We'd bring a blanket, sit in the outfield of the ball field closest to the water tower... and have a great view of the fireworks that were fired along the back fence of the property. I can't remember when Bellmawr stopped sponsoring them. I have memories of being there as a young kid.. but can't quite remember if they were around for my own kids in the 90s. So I ask this quesion... 100% my own thoughts... Would the Bellmawr's residents support spending money on Fireworks again? Or is there enough interest that people would band together to raise... Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Franklin's Paine Skate Park. Philly and Skaters Get it Right

Mark Matthews CNBNews Last month Philadelphia and the skater community completed a 10 yr effort to do something amazing. Something that works. Something that made me think "wow, how does this happen?". An awesome new skatepark... one like you've never seen before... opened in the city in a location that is as perfect as the park design itself. And its completely free. Ask anyone where the best skateboard locations were to be found, and most would probably say California. But if you had to pick an East Coast King, there is no doubt it is Philadelphia. Two locations became world famous decades ago, Love park and its at times taken over by skaters concrete walls, and FDR Park... the skater built, city seems to look... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: Bellmawr Park Photos from 1942

Mark Matthews CNBNews.net The Bellmawr Park Housing division was originally developed by the US Government as a means to house the defense workers needed to build ships in nearby Camden. Because of the uncertainty of how long people would be there working, the units were built small. According to wikipedia, eight of these communities were built in the short 2 year project... and the all turned into private ownership, with the Bellmawr location converting last in 1952. Here are series of amazing photographs taken around October 1942, around the opening of Bellmawr Park, which at the time featured a day care center! I've known about these pictures for several years. Never posted because my intent was to take the "today" pictures and match them up..... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark Matthews: A sign from Gloucester's newest bar The Hog and Bull

UPDATE: Grand opening is Friday June 14th. Website The shortest post ever... drove by the new bar / restaraunt on Rt 130 and noticed the signs are up. The Hog and Bull must be getting close to opening. I saw an SUV out front when I first passed, but I was late for an appointment and couldn't stop. When I came back an hour or so later, they were gone. Not really any clues to indicate a major construction. I am hoping the large stage that O'Malleys had a few years ago has still survived. Meandering w/ Mark: Movie "Girl Most Likely" set in Ocean City NJ, filmed in New York

CNBNews Mark Matthews The first trailer for a new major movie set in Ocean City, NJ has been released. The trailer also shows a scene taking place in Atlantic City. Unfortunately media sites indicate the film was shot in New York. Are State Tax Credits to blame? Kristen Wiig scored huge with Bridesmaids, and this summer she is back in a romantic comedy called "Girl Most Likely" co-starring Glee's Darren Criss and also featuring well known actors Annette Bening and Matt Dillon. I make this assessment only from viewing the trailer, but the movie seems to have a clear common theme with another movie set in this area "Silver Lining Playbook". Both have the storyline of "Adult child needs to live back at home after... Read more →

Meandering w/ Mark: Spring arrives at the GCN...New colors and authors are blooming

BY MARK MATTHEWS (cnbnews.net)This week's Gloucester City News is out, and it brings a few surprises! The most notable being, this issue brings us full-color on 4 pages (front/back/Interior). Well, at least I never noticed it being full color print before. I imagine this is in part due to the recent move to a new printer. Another ongoing surprise, is that each week the Gloucester City News seems to be adding more content, and more authors. Anne Forline of Bellmawr has become a prominent reporter, doing an awesome job covering local town meetings and general community interest stories for all of the GCN region. Something else I just noticed this week, is a Council meeting summary from Runnemede... expanding the reach into other communities. Some... Read more →

Bellmawr's Sauter Park on Park Drive in the Crescent Park section of town is in the final stages of having new playground equipment installed. On a visit today (4/20/2013) the only things that seemed to remain are putting the swings in place, and some surrounding landscape work.
