Certified Therapy Dogs Visit Long-Term Care Residents at Jefferson Health Care Center

Long-term care residents at the Jefferson Health Care Center (JHCC) in Washington Township recently enjoyed a special visit from certified therapy dogs Cole and Cece — along with their owners, Chris Hannah and fiancée, Nicole Sapello. The visit, held in collaboration with Angelic Health, was part of the Team Cole Project’s annual summer "Kindness Tour" to area schools, hospice patients, and veterans' homes. South Jersey dogs Cole, five, and Cece, 15 months, are anything but your typical canines, as the pit bulls were both born deaf. Cole has learned some American Sign Language commands from Chris. The Team Cole Project began when Chris adopted Cole when he was a puppy: "I have a deaf nephew, who at the time was only nine," said Chris. Jefferson Health to Provide Support Services for Delsea Regional Students and their Families

Representatives of Jefferson Health in New Jersey and the Delsea Regional School District in Franklinville, NJ, have formalized an agreement for Jefferson to offer specialized support services for students coping with lasting impacts of the pandemic. Jefferson Health will provide four social workers in the K-12 district and to neighboring parochial school, Our Lady of Mercy Academy, to address student needs. Additionally, Jefferson will provide a Community Wellness Manager to support the needs of families throughout the district. This trained professional social worker will provide resources to state and federal social programs addressing everything from food insecurity to lack of insurance, as well as provide resources to improve mental and physical health. STEMI Cath Lab Services for Heart Attack Treatment Now Offered at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital

For patients experiencing the most severe type of heart attack – ST elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI -- time is of the essence. Jefferson Health recently received New Jersey state certification to offer a specialized treatment, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), for STEMI patients at its Washington Township Hospital Catheterization Lab. A STEMI is a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery. Victoria and Chris Lacher of Sewell, with Cora Jane, born on New Year's Day. Congratulations! Sewell, January 1, 2024 -- The Jefferson Washington Township Hospital welcomed its first baby of the year, Cora Jane, on New Year's Day. She was born to Victoria and Chris Lacher of Sewell at 12:41 p.m. on January 1st. The baby weighed 7 lbs., 2 ounces, and measured 19 ½ inches long. Little Cora Jane also has a cleft chin like her parents and three-year-old brother. Moreover, Jefferson is celebrating a significant milestone this year, as the health system and university will turn 200 years old. The bicentennial celebrations will go on throughout 2024. Jefferson Washington Township Hospital greeted its first baby of 2024 on New Year’s Day! Victoria and Chris Lacher of Sewell, welcomed little Cora Jane at 12:41 p.m. on January 1st. Three Jefferson Health employees in New Jersey were recently honored with a Beyond Expectations of Excellence (BEE) Award for Extraordinary Caregivers — Patient Care Technicians MaryAnne Metzger and Theresa Sapigao, as well as Environmental Services associate Nicole Savoca. Jefferson Health registered nurses Amber Hart, BSN, RN, and Jeong Kim, BSN, RN, PCCN, were each recently honored with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Hart and Kim — who respectively work on the Silvestri 5 and C4 patient care units at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital and Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital — were recognized for establishing a connection with patients and families through trust and emotional support. Hart, of Pine Hill, NJ, received praise from colleagues for initiating a rapid response and administering Narcan to a patient suspected of taking illicit drugs. Area residents will have the opportunity to honor, remember, and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have battled cancer with the symbolic illumination of the “Tree of Lights” in the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Washington Township’s lobby on Wednesday, November 29. Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in New Jersey Receives $12,000 through fundraiser held by grateful patient

South Jersey resident and grateful patient Michelle Donio recently raised more than $12,000 in support of the Patient Assistance Fund at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in New Jersey. The Patient Assistance Fund helps patients who need help with rent, utilities or transportation, allowing them to continue focusing on their treatment. Donio, of Buena, hosted a breast cancer benefit, Sort for Support, at the Double P Ranch in Bridgeton over two days in early October for this effort. Ranch sorting is a western-style equestrian sport that involves two teams of riders separating cattle into pens on horseback against the clock. The event drew some 200 participants from up and down the East Coast. Jefferson Health recently presented two of its Washington Township Hospital employees — Jeffrey Szurek, RN, and Spencer Reitano, PCT — with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses and a Beyond Expectations of Excellence (BEE) Award. Jeffrey Szurek, an Emergency Department (ED) nurse, was recognized with a DAISY Award for providing compassionate patient care and assisting a co-worker. He stayed beyond his shift to offer support in a situation involving an Emergency Department patient (and his accompanying son), whose wife and mother was coincidentally a patient in the hospital’s ICU. Surgery Center, Hospital OR Employees Team Up for Lifesaving Care  

Two Jefferson Surgery Center employees — Certified Surgical Technician Meghan Cummings and Registered Nurse Jacqulen McCann — recently went “above and beyond” when reporting to the nearby Operating Room (OR) at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. Despite working in an ambulatory setting for several years, Meghan and Jackie jumped in to assist the OR team — Certified Surgical Technician Kari Dayton, Registered Nurses Robin Collins and Jennifer Delaney, and OB/GYN Chief Kenneth Covone, DO — with a patient experiencing a post-delivery hemorrhage that required immediate action and ended with a successful surgery. Eighteen young adults received Project SEARCH graduation certificates, marking their participation in a longstanding work-transition program at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital, Jefferson Stratford Hospital, and, for the first time, Jefferson Washington Township Hospital. These Project SEARCH interns attended classes at the hospitals every day throughout the school year, working and learning alongside Jefferson Health's employees. Children of two Jefferson Health - New Jersey employees have been named recipients of the annual Sanderson Memorial Scholarship. A $2,500 scholarship is awarded each year to two eligible dependent children of regular full- or part-time employees with at least one year of service. The scholarship is in memory of Sarah Sanderson, an original Board Member of then-Kennedy Health. Sanderson generously bestowed funds to promote the continuation of health education among promising young students. Jefferson Health – New Jersey is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $150,000 grant by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) for the COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccine Uptake Initiative. The program is supported with funding from the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant will support Jefferson Health’s work in making it as easy as possible for older adults and people with disabilities to get their updated vaccinations and protect their health. Reception Honoring the Late Dr. Joseph Pitone Held at Jefferson Stratford Hospital

A plaque was unveiled at Jefferson Stratford Hospital in honor of the late Joseph Pitone, DO, on March 2, 2023. Dr. Pitone, who died in 2018, was a beloved physician who had served as Medical Director of the Kennedy and Jefferson Health New Jersey Dialysis Program since its inception in the 1990s. Known as a true advocate for his patients, his legacy was honored by his wife, Gail, who made a generous gift in support of the Dialysis Program at Jefferson Health NJ. A plaque was placed in Dr. Pitone’s honor outside of the hospital’s inpatient dialysis unit (and also at the dialysis unit at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital). SJ Community Members Invited to Enroll in Course to Assist Spanish-Speaking Patients in Navigating the Healthcare System

South Jersey community members, both English and Spanish-speaking, are invited to take an online training course that will enable them to help guide Spanish-speaking patients through the healthcare system. The training program is aimed at helping community members become bilingual patient navigators or assist in their journey to become a medical interpreter. It is being offered at no cost through a Jefferson Health language services grant. These self-paced, online Medical Spanish and Medical English courses are mobile-friendly with 10-15 minute modules that fit into busy schedules. They focus on practicing medical terminology through authentic patient scenarios so participants can help Spanish-speaking community members overcome language barriers to get the care they need. New Interventional Radiology Lab Opens at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital

A new Interventional Radiology Laboratory – which will be used for an array of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures – has opened at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital. The $2.5 million, 1,380 square-foot facility houses the newest Philips Azurion imaging system. Bill Bottino Cancer Foundation Donates $35,000 to Benefit Cancer Patients at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in New Jersey

The Bill Bottino Cancer Foundation, a longtime supporter of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, recently donated $35,000 to the Patient Assistance Fund at Jefferson Health - New Jersey. The Cherry Hill ED behavioral health clinician and 51-year-old mother of two, had been out of work for a few months with a shoulder injury when her health took a terrifying turn.
