Long Fought Case Re: Clergy Abuse Probe Presented to NJ Supreme Court

by Dana DiFilippo, New Jersey Monitor April 28, 2025 The New Jersey Supreme Court heard arguments Monday in a long-fought case about whether a state grand jury can call out a private entity like the Catholic Church and recommend reforms for its public harms, like clergy sex abuse — or if such presentments are permissible only when they involve public entities and ongoing harms, as church attorneys contend. The Catholic Diocese of Camden has been battling the state to prevent a presentment since 2019, when former Attorney General Gurbir Grewal vowed to investigate clergy sex abuse. He acted after a Pennsylvania grand jury returned a presentment against hundreds of priests who victimized more than 1,000 children over seven decades Lower-court judges sided with the diocese and sealed the New Jersey case, so while the legal fight has continued for six years in secrecy, abuse victims were left wondering what happened... CNBNews March 2025 Cheers and Jeers

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews gloucestercitynews.net graphic files **CHEER** – We often discuss the lack of community pride in Gloucester City, but we have not acknowledged the two individuals who consistently contribute to the community, such as Patty Heiser and Joyce Calzonetti. Recently, at Market and Baynes Avenue, we witnessed Patty picking up litter while pushing a baby carriage. A young child was walking alongside her, holding onto the carriage as she collected trash in a plastic bag. Several years ago, we were driving into Gloucester City from Brooklawn early on a Saturday morning when we spotted Joyce Calzonetti collecting litter and placing it in a bag in the trunk of her car. When we stopped to ask Joyce why she was spending her time picking up trash, she simply shrugged and replied, "It's just something I do." Today Joyce is active in the Gloucester City Tree Commission and... Read more →

The Cold Springs School Signs (Gloucester City) Are In Deplorable Condition...

CORRECTION/UPDATED William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews CNBNews photo credit CNBNews believes that the structure has never been maintained based on its appearance. The washed-out white oval on the right depicts a cub lion sitting before books. This sign is just a few feet from Market Street a main route for people coming in and out of the city. What impression do those people have of the school district and the City of Gloucester City when they view this dilapidated structure? A view of the same sign reveals the rotting plywood and pieces of concrete that broke away from the damaged structure. The school opened in the mid-1990s and cost taxpayers of Gloucester City and the state of New Jersey an estimated $20 million to build. The preschool addition, which opened in 2004, cost $11 million. ***** GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (March 21, 2025)(CNBNews)--Anyone passing by the concrete signs welcoming students... Read more →

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

True or False: Before GHS Lions it was GHS Buccaneers

In 1966, I witnessed janitors at Mary Ethel Costello filling up a pickup truck with items they were clearing out of the old gym. One of the janitors mentioned dumping the items in the landfill behind Gloucester High School, where the JV baseball field used to be (now the varsity softball field). However, at a recent old-timers' banquet, I was informed that GHS was once known as the Buccaneers due to Gloucester's location on the river. I'm curious to know if you have any information about this. Is it true? When and why did the name change occur?... Read more →
