It's not rare as you think for a parent to deny their child's abuse

By Teresa Huizar The recently released Netflix series on the Menendez brothers reignited debate over whether a parent would overlook their child's abuse at the hands of their spouse. The sad truth is that these sorts of cases are far from unique or even uncommon. A parent faced with the abusive conduct of a partner, family member, or friend must confront the unthinkable -- harm to their child and the worst possible betrayal committed by someone they perhaps considered to be their life partner, better half, or best friend. Parents should know that initial feelings of confusion, or even shocked disbelief, are not unusual. But parents should also know that the decisions made in the immediate aftermath of such a revelation will have a lifelong impact. Rates of depression, PTSD, substance abuse, and suicide are all significantly higher for victims of child sexual assault. A child's trauma is only compounded... Read more →

Hunger is growing in South Jersey

Source-Kaitlyn McCormick Around South Jersey, families of all sizes are preparing to celebrate the upcoming winter holidays. For many, this means elaborate spreads of foods and desserts. But, as anyone working to help solve issues of food insecurity will tell you, numerous families in South Jersey communities depend on donations from pantries, food drives and seasonal food initiatives. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, members of many organizations and nonprofits prepared to assist those in need this season through meal distributions. In Camden, the Salvation Army members readied to hand out more than 1,000 turkey meals in partnership with the Food Bank of South Jersey to preregistered families at the Camden Kroc Center on Nov. 23. According to World Population Review, Camden City has a poverty rate of more than 31%. "The holiday season highlights the role of food in bringing families and communities together, but it also amplifies... Read more →

Push for Casino Smoking Ban in Atlantic City Casinos

Atlantic City New Jersey | Unsplash A significant update for Atlantic City's casino sector: assemblyman Brian Bergen has intensified his push to ban smoking in casinos to support the legislative dispute on the matter. Bergen, serving as the Assembly Republican Whip, openly criticized Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin for not prioritizing the smoking ban bill on the agenda of the New Jersey Legislature and emphasizing the pressing nature of this concern. The ongoing discussion about implementing non-smoking policies in Atlantic City casinos has been an ongoing debate for years. Some believe that the existing partial ban on smoking doesn't adequately safeguard employees from secondhand smoke risks. While land-based casinos continue dealing with this ongoing debate, online casinos remain unaffected by smoking regulations. Should Bergen’s push for legislation banning smoking in casinos pass, players who do indulge or who are concerned about second-hand smoke can find a safe haven on the Web.... Read more →

Happy New Year! Turnpike, Parkway tolls going up in January

Next year is shaping up to be an expensive one for Garden State drivers as the New Jersey Turnpike Authority officially joins a list of potential toll and fare hikes that will take effect in 2025. It was never a matter of "if" tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway would go up but rather "how much" as the authority has adopted an index approach to budgeting toll increases by a minimum of 3% each year. The process eliminates the need for public hearings. Tolls will increase on Jan. 1 by 16 cents on the NJ Turnpike and 8 cents at Parkway barrier plazas, and 3 cents on Parkway entrance and exit ramps. The revenue, according to the authority, will be used to fund its $2.7 billion budget. In the agenda for Tuesday's meeting, the authority said that toll revenue was down in 2024 for the ten... Van Drew Grills FEMA Administrator Regarding Bias Against Trump Supporters

Washington, DC (November 20, 2024)-Today, Congressman Van Drew questioned Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell in a House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee hearing about reports that FEMA workers were instructed to "avoid homes advertising Trump" while assisting hurricane victims. The directive led workers to skip over at least 20 homes displaying Trump campaign signs or flags. "In the most vulnerable moments of their lives, when these people are terrified and desperate for aid, the federal government turned its back on them because of their political beliefs," said Congressman Van Drew. "There is no place for bias in disaster relief—ever. FEMA has neglected its core mission of providing emergency support to all Americans and that is why I have sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Joseph Cuffari calling for an immediate investigation. We need to uncover the full extent of this abuse and hold those... Read more →
