Gcity's STREET SWEEPER IS BROKEN--The photo captures a moment earlier this week at the intersection of Sparks and Little Ridgeway Streets, just after the Gloucester City Street Sweeper made its rounds. Unfortunately, this $100,000-plus machine, which should be maintaining the city's cleanliness, is making the streets dirtier than they were before the sweeper passed. It raises an intriguing question: Why hasn’t Public Works Superintendent Alex Tedesco, with an annual salary of $121,000, taken the necessary steps to repair such a vital piece of equipment? Furthermore, as one observes the superintendent's pickup truck, it’s curious that there aren't any markings declaring it as part of Gloucester City Public Works. This absence only adds to the mystery surrounding the city's approach to maintaining the city sweeper that costs nearly half a million dollars.

WATCHING SUBMARINE RACES AT FREEDOM PIER
(See video below)
GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ--Recently, Connie and I made our way to Freedom Pier, intrigued by the age-old idea of "submarine races" supposedly taking place on the shimmering Delaware River. It stirred up memories of a time long past—who doesn’t recall those nights when Gloucester Park buzzed with excitement after high school dances or other jubilant events? In those days, it was the go-to hotspot for young lovers seeking a moment of intimacy. Every so often, the notorious "Flashlight Harry" would mysteriously appear, his old flashlight beam piercing the darkness as he playfully invaded the privacy of parked cars, catching couples in their romantic embraces.
The phrase "submarine races" is not about actual submarines competing beneath the waves; rather, it was a cheeky euphemism popular in the 1950s and 1, signifying couples "making out" or "necking" in parked cars. It served as a coy and playful nod to romantic encounters, especially among teenagers navigating the exhilarating freedom of youth during the era captured in shows like *Happy Days*.
As we parked near the pier we noticed on both sides of the Delaware river, cargo ships loomed large as they were unloaded, Picture the scene: if you were to buy one of the 300-plus condos planned for construction on Freedom Pier, you’d be serenaded each night by the relentless hum of industrial cranes, forklifts and the clattering of crates—the persistent noise disrupting your dreams as you lay in your bed tossing and turning trying to sleep.
As for Connie and me, our venture into the world of submarine races quickly revealed its limitations. The spirit was willing, but our bodies had other plans. After all, it was well past 9 PM, and we were accustomed to the gentle embrace of sleep by that hour. Where was Peyton, you ask? She was snoring in the back of the van.
