Statement from Assemblyman Calabrese on the NJ TRANSIT Rail Strike

(TRENTON, NJ) – Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese (D–Bergen, Passaic), Chair of the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, issued the following statement in response to the strike initiated by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) that has resulted in a complete suspension of NJ TRANSIT rail service as of 12:01 a.m. on May 16:

“Today’s disruption marks a historic and deeply consequential moment for New Jersey commuters, as NJ TRANSIT faces its first rail strike in more than forty years. While I recognize and respect the vital role locomotive engineers play in the safe operation of our public transit system, I am gravely concerned about the breadth of this shutdown’s impact on working families, essential personnel, students, and the broader regional economy.

“I urge both NJ TRANSIT and the leadership of the BLET to return to the negotiating table immediately—and in good faith—to work toward a resolution that is fair to our workers, sustainable for commuters, and responsible to the taxpayers who help fund this essential public service. A prolonged work stoppage serves no one, and continued inaction risks lasting harm to a system New Jersey and its residents rely on each day.

“In the meantime, I commend the contingency efforts being carried out by NJ TRANSIT and other transportation providers working diligently to maintain mobility across our region. However, stopgap measures—no matter how well executed—cannot substitute for the stability and reach of a fully functioning rail network.

“My office continues to closely monitor the situation and provide timely information to the public. I remain committed to supporting a swift, equitable resolution that restores full service and upholds public trust in our transportation infrastructure.

“This moment demands leadership, dialogue, and a shared commitment to responsible resolution.”
