Investing in the Future of America

Unnamed (2)This week, President Trump announced support for my legislation in the House budget reconciliation bill that would give children born in the United States $1,000 investment accounts. The Invest America Act would trigger fundamental and transformative changes for the financial security and personal freedoms of American citizens for generations. Every child in America will have private investment accounts that will compound over their lives, enhancing the prosperity and economic participation of the vast majority of Americans. And it also allows friends, family and employers to give up to $5,000 a year in a tax advantage account to that account. When people years from now talk about the changes created by Republican efforts this Congress, this is one of the landmark achievements they will talk about.

Last week, the Senate Commerce Committee hosted a meeting to discuss the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the incredible potential it holds. Over the past two years, AI has brought the United States and the world to a critical inflection point and may be transformative in unleashing a new global industrial revolution—unlocking opportunities to improve our quality of life, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth. We know that the country leading in AI innovation will shape the global order of the 21st century. For America to remain an economic powerhouse, we must outpace China, which is dedicating every available resource to becoming the global AI leader by 2030. As a matter of national security, we must win the AI race. However, doing so requires a careful balance between regulation and support for AI innovation. For years, we’ve seen Europe and other countries struggle under burdensome regulations that hinder economic growth and stifle AI’s full potential. That’s why it is critical that we properly harness the power of artificial intelligence—ensuring the U.S. continues to lead the world in growth, job creation, development, and production.

As Chairman of the Commerce Committee and as your Senator, I remain committed to ensuring that Texas has the resources it needs to stay at the forefront of AI development in America. I will fight to ensure the United States remains the global leader in AI.

An outbreak of New World Screwworms is threatening the cattle industry in Texas and across America. That’s why I introduced the STOP Screwworm legislation to create a facility that combats this outbreak. Texas agriculture and livestock are a core part of the Texas economy, and they feed America and the world. I’m working daily with Secretary Rollins, Texas authorities, and my colleagues in Congress to safeguard Texas from threats including the New World Screwworm, and pushing Mexico to implement their commitments to eradication.

I visited West Point Military Academy last weekend to meet cadets, professors, and staff. During my visit, I spoke to the 19 American Politics graduating seniors and the rest of the class about the importance of military service. The young men and women who attend our military academies are spearheading the future of our military, and their leadership is vital for our national security. While this chapter of their lives is coming to a close, the pages ahead are filled with challenge, purpose, and greatness. It is an honor to represent these individuals as a Senator, and I know our country will continue to support them.

This past weekend, I spoke to a group of high school seniors who received a nomination from my office to attend one of the US Military Academies. It is inspiring to see young men and women dedicate their lives to these academies so they can become the next generation of military leaders our country needs. My office received over 1000 applicants for the Class of 2029, and the top 200 candidates were reviewed by my Academy Review board, resulting in 35 nominations and appointments from the academies. On Saturday, I visited with 21 of those nominees and thanked them for their willingness to serve the country as they prepare to start classes at the Academies this Summer.
