International Fugitive Extradited from Ukraine to New Jersey

UkraineCamden, NJ – An international fugitive has been extradited from Ukraine back to New Jersey to face charges in reference to multiple 2022 bank robberies, announced Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, U.S. Marshal Juan Mattos Jr. (District of New Jersey), Waterford Police Chief Daniel Cormaney, and Winslow Police Chief Donald Lemons.

Edward Deveaux, 30, of Berlin Township, NJ returned to the United States on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Earlier that day, the National Guard of Ukraine turned over Deveaux to members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force – Camden and Trenton Divisions and the Polish Police (Policja) during a meeting at the Korczowa border checkpoint.  Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the exchange.  Deveaux was later flown from Warsaw, Poland to Newark, New Jersey.

After returning to New Jersey, Deveaux was processed and remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility.  A detention hearing for Deveaux is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Camden County Hall of Justice.

“The arrest and extradition of this defendant – who fled roughly 4,500 miles away – is a testament to what we can accomplish when law enforcement at all levels works together,” said Prosecutor MacAulay.  “We are grateful for the efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, and our international colleagues.”

“It makes no difference where fugitives run, justice has a long reach,” said Juan Mattos Jr., U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey. “This arrest is the result of relentless, teamwork from our state, county, local, and international partners. The U. S. Marshals Service remains committed to ensuring that those who commit violent crimes are held accountable, no matter the borders they cross.”

Earlier this year, Deveaux was taken into custody on February 25, 2025, in Lviv, Ukraine, by Ukrainian authorities working in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service – Office of International Operations and the U.S. Department of Justice – Office of International Affairs.  The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Legal Attaché to Poland and Ukraine also assisted in the extradition process.

Deveaux was charged on September 30, 2022, with two counts of second-degree Robbery for committing robberies at a Truist Bank in Waterford on September 22, 2022, and a Republic Bank in Winslow on September 28, 2022.  The robberies were investigated by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit in collaboration with the Waterford Police Department and Winslow Police Department.

Additionally, Deveaux was charged on October 3, 2022, in reference to a robbery that occurred on September 26, 2022, at the TD Bank in Willingboro, Burlington County.

During the fugitive investigation, CCPO Senior Detective Stephen Bezich, a task force officer with the U.S. Marshal Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force – Camden Division, uncovered information that revealed Deveaux had flown to multiple countries in Europe before ultimately entering Ukraine in the days after the Winslow bank robbery.  Additional information was developed that lead authorities to Deveaux’s whereabouts in Lviv, Ukraine.  Senior Detective Bezich was among the members of the U.S. Marshals Service who traveled to Poland and then to the Polish/Ukrainian border to take custody of Deveaux.

All individuals charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
