Haddon Heights, NJ – This Sunday marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic loss of Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Investigator John “Jack” McLaughlin and Haddon Heights Police Patrolman John Norcross.
These brave men were shot and killed in the line of duty during a child abuse investigation in Haddon Heights on April 20, 1995. The latter’s brother, retired Haddon Heights Detective Richard Norcross, was wounded, but thankfully survived.
To honor these heroes, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and Haddon Heights Police Department held a 30th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony on April 17, 2025, at the McLaughlin-Norcross Memorial Dell at Haddon Lake Park in Haddon Heights.
“Today, we celebrate their legacy, inspiring new generations of officers to carry the torch of bravery and selflessness,” said Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay. “We’ll always remember Jack McLaughlin and John Norcross. Not only for their sacrifice, but for the lives they lived in service to others.”
“This Easter Sunday, April 20th, marks the 30-year anniversary of one of the worst events ever to take place in Haddon Heights,” said Haddon Heights Police Chief Thomas Schneider. “While spending time with family and friends this weekend, please take a moment to remember the sacrifices these two officers made for all of us. We will never forget their sacrifice and always honor their memory.”
The ceremony included a moving performance by the Camden County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and a presentation of wreathes to the McLaughlin and Norcross families. Richard Norcross and Investigator McLaughlin’s daughters, Tori and Kirsten, spoke about their loved ones and thanked the community for its continued support.
“This memorial is not just a tribute to John and Jack, but a reminder of the importance of unity and gratitude,” said Richard Norcross. “Let us honor their memory by fostering a community that values compassion, respect, and justice.”
