By Slim Randles | CNBNews Contributor There are those who believe that old sayings are wise because someone now dead said them or wrote then or carved them into the cave walls a long time ago. But it’s our journalistic duty to laugh at ones that are just ridiculous. Case in point “There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man.” Have you ever brushed the outside of a horse? I don’t mean just getting the Cretaceous crust off him with a curry comb. I mean getting a soft brush in there all the way to bedrock (or his skin) whichever comes first. Depending on where you live, you will find hidden in that soft brush such things as yellow snow, goatheads, trail dust, horse slobber from one of his corral mates that settled in and dried, and dead grass. If you’re fortunate...

Image source: https://pixabay.com/photos/baseball-stadium-sport-636802/ With activity in the 2025 MLB season intensifying, the Philadelphia Phillies are back amid another war in one of the league's most rugged divisions — the National League East. They are currently 15-13, trailing only the red-hot New York Mets (18-7). But a costly sweep at the hands of the Mets helped raise questions about the Phillies and their credentials as true challengers for the divisional crown. However, even with the early-season missteps, Philadelphia is far from out of the picture in the NL East. Management Woes The Phillies have struggled with many things this season, but one of their biggest issues has been consistency, particularly in the bullpen. They have the third-worst mark in the league with a 5.81 ERA among relievers and have been plagued by late-game collapses. The fragility of the Phillies' relief corps was on full display during their most recent defeat, a courageous comeback...

Credit: iStock/thegoodphoto Newswise — Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have found that individuals with colon cancer and a documented history of high cannabis use were more than 20 times more likely to die within five years of diagnosis compared to those without such a history. “This study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that heavy cannabis use may have underrecognized impacts on the immune system, mental health and treatment behaviors — all of which could influence cancer outcomes,” said lead author Raphael Cuomo, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. The research team drew on electronic health records from more than 1,000 colon cancer patients treated across the University of California Health system between 2012 and 2024. by Dana DiFilippo, New Jersey Monitor April 28, 2025 The New Jersey Supreme Court heard arguments Monday in a long-fought case about whether a state grand jury can call out a private entity like the Catholic Church and recommend reforms for its public harms, like clergy sex abuse — or if such presentments are permissible only when they involve public entities and ongoing harms, as church attorneys contend. The Catholic Diocese of Camden has been battling the state to prevent a presentment since 2019, when former Attorney General Gurbir Grewal vowed to investigate clergy sex abuse. He acted after a Pennsylvania grand jury returned a presentment against hundreds of priests who victimized more than 1,000 children over seven decades Lower-court judges sided with the diocese and sealed the New Jersey case, so while the legal fight has continued for six years in secrecy, abuse victims were left wondering what happened...
