Margaret Mary Thomas, 77, of Gloucester City

Margaret Mary Thomas (nee Durkin) of Gloucester City passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 77.
Margaret was the adored and loving wife to Joseph J. Thomas, Sr. for 56 years. Margaret was born in the city of Camden on April 2, 1947 and was raised in Gloucester City by her father and mother, the late James A. Durkin and Margaret E. Durkin (nee Klostermann). “Marge” or “Margie” as many knew her was a graduate of Saint Mary’s Grammar School in 1961 and graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School in 1965. She obtained her Associate of Science Degree from Camden County College in 2008.
Marge started her career in education as a teacher at Our Lady of Grace School in Somerdale. While at Our Lady of Grace School, she founded the school’s basketball program for girls. While raising a family, she became a special education paraprofessional with the Gloucester City School District for 26 years. She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Mary’s R.C. Church in Gloucester City.
Marge was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and was previously a West Chapter 5 ladies basketball referee during her teaching career. Marge enjoyed many summers while growing up living in Beach Haven, NJ, sitting by the pool at the Gloucester Swim Club watching her children compete on the swim and diving teams. Later in retirement, she enjoyed traveling the US and to Ireland with her husband and visits with her grandchildren.
Marge will be deeply missed and is survived by her family: Joseph J. Thomas, Sr. (Husband), her sons Joseph J. and wife Tina Thomas, Jr., James G. Thomas, Daniel P. and wife Sharon Thomas, and her daughter Katherine J. and husband Stephen Grady.
Marge was a loving sister to her siblings: Rev. James J. Durkin, John T. and wife Terry Durkin, the late Thomas J. and surviving wife Denny Durkin, and Joseph F. and wife Joan Durkin. Marge was also the proud and loving grandmother of Ryan, Collin, Daniel, and Madeline. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws of both the Thomas and Durkin families.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Marge’s Viewing on Saturday morning, March 8, 2025, from 10:15 am to 12:15 pm at Saint Mary’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 pm. Interment at New Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr NJ will follow mass.
