Take Action for Clean Water on World Water Day, March 22
PHILADELPHIA, PA— March 22nd marks World Water Day, a global day of observance to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The intention is to inspire people around the world to learn more about water-related issues and to take action to make a difference. The annual theme focuses on topics related to clean WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene. The main purposes of providing access to WASH services are to achieve public health gains, implement the human right to water and sanitation, reduce the burden of collecting drinking water for women, and improve education and health outcomes. Access to WASH services is an important component of water security.
Here at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, we aim to make a difference every day, and invite you to participate in our World Water Day 2025 activities.

Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
Beginning at 11:00 a.m., individuals and families are invited to participate in an activity once popular in the 1800’s in Victorian England — collecting and arranging diatoms! Join our interactive Pop-up Diatoms - Jewels of the River and learn about these fascinating organisms that live in our rivers. Diatoms are single-celled algae that have silica in their cell walls, which form intricate, geometric shapes. Through photosynthesis, they produce 20 to 50% of the oxygen on our planet! Make a diatom print to take home! This activity is free and open to all.
