When we stopped to ask Joyce why she was spending her time picking up trash, she simply shrugged and replied, "It's just something I do." Asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the flu, and heart disease are among the health conditions that can cause oxygen levels to drop. Being at higher altitudes, where the amount of oxygen in the air can be less than at sea level, can be another factor that can cause oxygen levels to drop. One way to monitor the level of oxygen in the blood is by using a device called a pulse oximeter, or pulse ox. A pulse oximeter can estimate the amount of oxygen in the blood without having to draw a blood sample. What is a pulse oximeter? A pulse oximeter is a device that is usually clipped on a fingertip and uses light beams to estimate a person’s blood oxygen level (oxygen saturation) and... Read more →

NATIONAL RIFLE ASSN. ALERT: New Anti-Gun Legislation Moves to NJ Senate

On Monday, March 24, the Assembly passed several gun control bills. Most of the bills addressed issues which are already illegal under both state and federal law. It is an election year in New Jersey, and action on this package of bills appears to be more about politics than public safety. The votes largely followed party lines, with Republicans opposing and Democrats supporting the legislation—except for Democratic Assembly members David Bailey (D-3) and Heather Simmons (D-3), who voted against it, and Republican Assembly members Nancy Munoz (D-21) and Michele Matsikoudis (D-21), who voted in favor. The following bills will now be transmitted to the Senate for further consideration. A.4974 prescribing penalties for the sale and possession of “machine gun conversion devices.” Such devices are already banned at both the state and federal level. There has never been an explanation why this bill is necessary. Given that New Jersey’s definition would... Read more →

From Rugby Fields to Wellness: How Athletes Are Using CBD for Pain Relief

Athletes participating in high-impact sports like rugby put tremendous stress on their bodies, often leading to chronic pain, inflammation, and slow recovery times. Traditional pain relief methods, like opioids or NSAIDs, often come with side effects or risks of dependency; many athletes have turned to cannabidiol (CBD) as a natural alternative for managing pain and improving recovery; its research backing up athlete testimonials shows CBD's promise as a pain-reliever without psychoactive side effects of THC. Below, we discuss how CBD works, its advantages for athletes, and the scientific reasons underlying its pain-relief properties. How CBD Works in the Body CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that help regulate pain, inflammation, mood, and sleep. Unlike THC, CBD doesn't cause an immediate "high," instead supporting its balance by helping keep inflammation at bay and overactive pain signals at bay. When athletes experience muscle soreness or joint pain,... Read more →
