Homicide Arrest - Ricardo Ponds

Phila policeOn January 30, 2025, at 9:42 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North 47th Street after receiving a report of a body found inside a garbage can on the highway. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased individual who appeared to be African American, though their age and sex were initially unknown. Medic 9 responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased at 9:51 a.m. The victim was later identified as 54-year-old Deborah Leatherberry from the 6100 block of Wheeler Street, with the cause of death determined to be a gunshot wound to the left temple.
Following an investigation, a suspect was identified, and this evening, 61-year-old Ricardo Ponds, from the 400 block of Lancaster Avenue, was arrested without incident by SEPTA officers at 15th and Market. He will be charged with Murder, Violations of the Uniform Firearms Act (VUFA), and related offenses.
