Statement from Majority Leader Greenwald and Assemblywoman Kane
Condemning ICE Raid at Jersey Kebab
We strongly condemn the recent ICE raid at Jersey Kebab in Haddon Township, which has instilled fear and distress within our community. This unjust action has disrupted the lives of Celal and Emine Emanet, as well as their family, who are integral to the local economy. Our community is strongest when all individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of their immigration status.
While we all agree that the most violent criminals who are here illegally should be removed from our country, the Emanet family does not meet this standard. On the contrary, they embody everything we should celebrate in the American Dream. The Emanet family came to this country legally on a religious visa, built a thriving business, and provided for their family. Beyond their own success, they have given back to the community in countless ways—feeding the poor, supporting the disabled, and assisting our veterans, all without asking for anything in return.
These are the values that should be supported, not disrupted through raids. It is telling that citizens from across the country have rallied behind the Emanet family, contributing to their GoFundMe page in support of their fight against this injustice. This outpouring of support demonstrates the overwhelming backing for this hardworking, generous family.
Ironically, if they manage to raise $5 million, perhaps they could buy a “Trump Gold Card.” It is deeply troubling that a family that has given so much to our community is now being treated as criminals, while others who have contributed far less to society are rewarded.
This raid does nothing to improve public safety or address the true needs of our country. Instead, it sows division and fear, eroding trust between immigrants and local authorities. We stand in solidarity with the Emanet family and all others impacted by this raid. We call for a compassionate, just approach to immigration—one that values the well-being of all individuals and fosters unity, not division. Our community thrives when we uplift each other, not tear eachother apart. We must continue to fight for fairness, respect, and humanity for all
