Electricity prices set to rise by roughly $25 per month this summer

By: Nikita Biryukov The price of electricity is set to soar this June after successive electricity auctions yielded results that could boost bills by more than $25 a month. The Board of Public Utilities on Wednesday approved the results of a Monday electricity auction, green-lighting prices driven higher by growing demand for electricity. “No one likes to see bill increases,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, the board’s president. “We understand that, and we are committed to doing everything we can at this department to ensure we’re keeping prices as low as possible.” Guhl-Sadovy said increases in demand and lower supply contributed to the higher auction prices. In New Jersey, utilities annually buy electricity supply through auctions. Utility providers can’t profit from the sale of electricity supply and must provide it to ratepayers at cost. Rate Counsel Brian Lipman, whose office advocates for ratepayers on utility matters, said the increases would add between... Read more →

NJ Residents May Notice Salty Taste in Tap Water

CAMDEN, N.J. (FEB. 14, 2025) – Due to the use of salt and brine for public safety during the recent extreme winter weather and, ongoing drought conditions, New Jersey residents may have noticed a salty taste in their tap water. Despite the slight change in taste, New Jersey American Water wants to assure its customers that the water it provides continues to meet all health-based primary drinking water standards. Each winter, local road departments, commercial parking lot owners, and homeowners use salt to melt snow and ice and to maintain roads and other surfaces for safe traction. As snow and ice melt, this salt can wash into nearby waterways, some of which serve as drinking water sources. This causes higher concentrations of sodium and chloride in the source water, which is exacerbated by lower reservoir and river levels caused by the statewide drought conditions, and results in a salty taste.... Eviction record reform could help housing crisis

By Christina Lengyel | The Center Square (The Center Square) - As the housing crisis continues in Pennsylvania and homelessness continues to rise, policymakers are considering strategies to reduce barriers to obtaining housing. In his budget proposal last month, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced a plan to seal eviction records that don’t actually lead to an eviction. As it stands, any eviction filing goes to a tenant’s record, regardless of whether the issue goes to court and what the final outcome is, a policy he says “makes no sense.” “Let’s deploy our commonsense mentality and fix this together by sealing those cases from public records,” said Shapiro. Records of evictions appear on background checks, which can not only impact a person’s chances of securing housing but can also compromise employment prospects, compounding challenges faced by many who are unhoused. Advocates say that expanding access to eviction counsel could be a step... Read more →
