Washington, DC - Congressman Van Drew issued the following statement on the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) efforts to rein in wasteful spending. DOGE has been tasked with identifying fraud and waste in the federal government. They do not make cuts themselves but rather they make recommendations to the President and Congress who have the final say in what gets cut. "Washington bureaucrats have been wasting the American people's hard-earned money for far too long, and it is time for that to stop," said Congressman Van Drew. "But let's be clear—these cuts need to be made with a scalpel, not a sledgehammer. We must make sure your tax dollars are spent where they actually belong. "While hardworking Americans are breaking their backs, working two or three jobs to put food on the table, the government is spending billions overseas on things like: $15 million for condoms to the Taliban; $2...

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s first official trip across Latin America has set the stage for a belligerent anti-refugee, anti-migrant U.S. foreign policy approach to the region. Rubio used his trip to pursue opaque and potentially illegal bilateral agreements with countries on enforcement and deportation—and abandon existing regional efforts to share responsibility to protect and support migrants and asylum seekers. LETTER TO THE EDITOR This week, Guatemala and El Salvador agreed to receive third country nationals deported from the United States. There are no guarantees in place that these individuals will have an opportunity to seek asylum or assurance that they will not be subject to mistreatment or returned to persecution. Laws allowing adults to use marijuana are becoming more common across the U.S. The drug is now legal for medical use in 39 states and for recreational use in 24 states. The state-by-state percentages range from 34% of adults in Vermont to 14% in Alabama. In Texas, where medical use of the drug is legal, 15% said they'd used the drug.
