GLASSBORO, NJ - Brycen Williams scored 17 points to help Rowan edge New Jersey City, 74-70, in an NJAC men's basketball matchup this afternoon. The Profs improve to 10-8 and 7-4 in the conference.
Williams made four three-pointers in the contest and finished the game hitting 5-of-10 from the field. Khalif Meares scored 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting and Dan Mason and Taz Cantey each contributed 10 points to the win.
With 2:09 remaining, Rowan increased its lead to 68-63 on a dunk by Ife Okebiorun. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way until Meares made a pair of free throws at :12 to provide the final margin. Cantey had four points in the stretch that maintained the Profs' lead.
The teams were tied at 48-48 at 12:12 of the second half, when Rowan took the lead for with five straight points, including a three by Mason. The Profs then grabbed their biggest advantage of the half after a three from Williams made the score 56-50.
NJCU (11-7; 6-5) would tie it one more time, 61-61, before Williams knocked down a three to give the Profs the lead for good.
A 7-0 run by Rowan to start the game was erased by NJCU's 11-2 spurt that gave them an 11-9 lead. With the game tied at 14-14, NJCU outscored Rowan, 13-4, to take its biggest lead of the half, 27-16, with over seven minutes to play.
With 4:31 left in the half, NJCU had a 31-26 lead but Rowan closed out the period owning a 34-33 lead after baskets by Meares and Mason in the final two minutes.
Rowan's next game is Wednesday at Rutgers-Camden with a 6 p.m. start.
