Beacon Building Unveiled To The Public
Monday, January 13, 2025
On January 14 at 11 a.m. at Joint Health Sciences Center, 201 Broadway, Camden, the Camden County Improvement Authority, the Camden County Commissioners and NJ Transit are presenting the newest vision for the fourth largest transit hub in the state of New Jersey – the Beacon Building. A grand vision of the public parcels, that are sandwiched between Federal Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, will house the largest office structure in South Jersey outside of Atlantic City. The 25-story Beacon Building will compliment NJ Transit’s vision for a 21st century public transportation center out of the reconstructed Walter Rand Transportation Center. The facility will include a parking structure on Lot N and a public square that will be the landmark of city’s downtown.
Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. talked about the impact the Beacon Building would have on the city and county.
“Camden City has made outstanding progress over the last 10 years in all facets of life throughout the city and the construction of the Beacon Building would be a generational investment for the future of the city and its residents,” Cappelli said. “This new vision of our public space within a busy corridor of the city would represent an unprecedented expansion of economic development in the area and would be asset for the city for the next 100 years.”
More than three years ago Gov. Phil Murphy pledged more than $250 million to fully renovate and revise the Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC) in Camden City. Since that time, the Camden County Commissioners have been working with the master developer, Gilbane, and owner of the site, NJ Transit, to create a state-of-the-art transportation hub. At this time, NJ Transit has gotten the forthcoming design of the project to 30% and renderings have been made public for the vision of the space.
In addition to the Beacon Building, NJ Transit will be unveiling their newest vision for the Walter Rand Transportation Center to the public. The transit agency’s executives will be providing overviews on the future of the complex.
Commissioner Jeffrey Nash pointed to the size and scope of the project.
“The Beacon Building will be signal to the region that Camden is not only a city of promise on the rise, but it is also the place to be do business and the center of the Eds and Meds universe for the state of New Jersey,” Nash said. “This building will be the perfect complement for other anchor institutions in the area and will be a catalyst for continued economic development in the city and county.”
