Deptford Police Officer Involved in Shooting

DEPTFORD, NJ (December 17, 2024)--On Thursday, November 28, 2024, at approximately 1:30 pm, the Deptford Township Police Department responded to the Fairfield Inn, located at 1160 Hurffville Road, Deptford, NJ, after hotel management requested police response and advised one of the occupants had been acting aggressively. Preliminary investigation revealed that when officers arrived at the hotel, they spoke with occupant Jeffrey Jaworski, age 58, of Sewell, N.J. Jaworski opened his hotel room door for the officers but quickly slammed it shut.  Jaworski refused to comply with the officers’ request to open the door and was advised he was arrested. After gaining access to the room with management assistance, officers learned that Jaworski jumped from the second-floor window of the room and fled on foot.

Officers followed Jaworski on foot into a dense wooded area in the rear of the hotel parking lot. Jaworski told police that he had a gun.  During the encounter, Deptford Township Police Sergeant David Grogan discharged three (3) rounds at Jaworski from his service weapon. Jaworski sustained a single gunshot wound. Jaworski then moved further into the wooded area, jumped over a chain link fence, fled on foot into traffic on Route 42 and was subsequently taken into custody.

Jaworski was transported to Cooper Hospital, Camden, New Jersey, to be treated for a non-fatal gunshot wound. The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently charged Jaworski with being a fugitive from justice and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Detective Jordan Plitt of the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office at 856-384-5583.
