By Sally C. Pipes America's health bill will surpass $7.7 trillion by 2032. That's equivalent to one in every five dollars flowing through the economy. To address this crisis, we must make health care work like other sectors of our economy, rather than the bloated, over-regulated mess it is today. And that will require giving patients more control over their healthcare dollars. Because massive government programs like Medicare reimburse providers so little, hospitals and doctors charge private insurers higher rates to make up the difference. Private health plans pay hospitals 254% of what Medicare would have paid, on average. Private insurers pass their higher costs onto patients in the form of soaring premiums, deductibles, and restrictions on what's covered. Obamacare's many mandates have encouraged consolidation throughout the healthcare marketplace. Hospitals are getting bigger, too, in order to gain negotiating leverage with insurers. The 10 biggest U.S. healthcare systems now manage...

The statement below is by Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. regarding the passing of former President Jimmy Carter “The Camden County Board of Commissioners and I are deeply saddened by the news that former President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100. I remember when I first entered public service, I had to ask myself what kind of leader I wanted to be, and nobody laid the blueprint for true goodness and strength like President Carter. His approach to leadership was defined by empathy, kindness, support, and a genuine unrelenting desire to make the world a better place. Known as the shining example of morality in leadership, Carter led the nation through a tumultuous crisis following the end of the Vietnam War and was unapologetic with his advocacy for human rights concerns, environmental protections, and world peace. Unlike most presidents, Carter was lauded for his humanitarian efforts...

By Andrei Iancu America's first patent statutes date to the 18th century, when steam engines and cotton gins were cutting-edge. The law that defines what inventions are patentable was written in 1793, and its operative language has not been substantively revised since. It’s little wonder, then, that in recent years, confusion has reigned over what can and cannot be patented. The Supreme Court has stepped in to try and craft workable rules, but has only confused matters further. Only Congress can adequately clarify our patent laws, and the time to do so is now — before we lose any more of our global competitive edge. In the first of four key cases, 2010's Bilski v. Kappos, the court held that a finance firm's method for reducing risk in commodities trading was ineligible for a patent. But the court didn't clarify which, if any, new business processes are eligible. Next, in...

By Dr. Brian Hainline Everyone knows that exercise is healthy, and that playing sports is one of the best -- and most enjoyable -- ways to maintain optimal weight, boost mental wellbeing, and improve strength, balance, and flexibility. But what is the "healthiest" sport? Does it really matter which activity folks pick, so long as they're exercising? Contrary to conventional wisdom, it does matter. A recent study tracked more than 8,000 people over a quarter century to determine which activities offered the greatest health benefits. And there was a clear standout: tennis.
