GLASSBORO - Danny Fleming scored a career-high 26 points, Taz Cantey had 22 and Tyrese Myrick added 20 points as Rowan (2-2; 1-0) held off Montclair State, 107-102, in the NJAC men's basketball opener for both teams.
Fleming was 10-for-14 from the field and had seven rebounds with Cantey and Myrick each posting season-highs in their first season with the Profs. Khalif Meares scored 18 points and grabbed five steals, while handing out six assists.
The defending regular-season champion Profs had a 19-point lead, 76-57, early in the second half, but saw Montclair State (3-1; 0-1 NJAC) slowly chip away at the lead, cutting it to 98-87 with 5:47 remaining. The Red Hawks pulled within 103-93 at 3:06, and Meares grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed it down the court, ending with a dunk to push the lead back up to 105-93.
MSU scored seven straight as a three-pointer by Mike Jackson cut the deficit to 105-100 with :13 to play before Chris McCarron sealed the Rowan with with two free throws at :07.
The Profs were in control from the start, scoring 13 straight points in the opening minutes, paced by six points from Fleming, to jump out to a 13-2 lead. The Profs maintained the double-digit lead through the half going up by as much as 20 points, 63-43, at 4:30. The Red Hawks came within, 64-51, after a 10-1 run, but Rowan maintained a 66-51 halftime lead.
Rowan finished the half shooting 61 percent from the field (22-for-36) and going 8-for-12 from three-point range.
Rowan returns to action after the holiday on Wednesday, December 4 when it hosts Rutgers-Camden, at 5:30 p.m., in the first game of a conference doubleheader.
