Federal Employees Are In For A Big Surprise

A hundred years ago or so, Gloucester City and many other towns had two of everything.  Two police departments, two fire departments, etc.  Why?  If you are asking that question you are naive.  On January 1st of each year the new city council took the Oath of office.  If the Democrats had a majority, the Republicans had to pack up and leave until the next time their party won.  Same thing went in the other direction.  The party of the council determined who got to keep their jobs.

Later, but none too soon, came into being Civil Service which supposedly protected government employees from politics.  Note the word supposedly.

It has started already, the "Anti-Trump cult" saying that the President-elect is taking all their jobs away from them.  That isn't even a half-truth; there is a whisper of truth to it.  The average person has to apply for a government job, then take the Civil Service test.  Those who scored the top three are interviewed after a background check (called vetting) is done.  If you make it through all that, you are hired.  If not, the person who scored forth on the test moves up.

We move ahead many years and now politicians are no more honest than 100 years ago.  Today we have Google to help get information on any specific topic.  Due to law suits we know that Google takes you to sites which are aligned with their (liberal) views.  A researcher has to do a lot of work to find something objective. Here goes.

Many years ago (no one seems to know specifically who or when) politicians started taking their staff members and putting them into the Civil Service organization.  These people didn't have to apply for jobs, the jobs were given to them.  They didn't have to take the exam, they already had the job.  Vetting?  Don't be ridiculous!

These are some of the people the President-elect wants out of the government workforce.  There are also several states who are protecting their political appointees who were moved over to Civil Service.  They are: AR, FL, GA, IN, MS, MO, TX, and UT.  The political tide has changed in some of these states so political appointees might be in trouble in these states, also.  Surprisingly, NJ isn't on that list.

The long and short of the "cult rage" is that if you got your job the correct way and, if a federal employee, you have to come back to the office five days a week, but your job is probably safe.  However, there are still millions of federal employees working from home, and they don't plan to change that.  Donald Trump does.
