Community Activist Joan Corcoran, age 87, of Gloucester City Succumbs

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (November 26, 2024)--On November 23, 2024, at the age of 87, Joan passed peacefully at Autumn Lake in Voorhees, NJ. (nee Cox). A longtime resident of Gloucester City. Loving and devoted wife of 48 years to the late Dr John Harris Corcoran. Loving mother of Holly Lynne Bisaha (John), Heather Griffiths (Mark), and Shawn Corcoran (Maureen). Cherished grandmother of Johnny Harris, McKenna Michael, Daniel P. Griffiths, Samantha Holly Griffiths, Sarah Rae Griffiths, John Robert Corcoran, Joseph Daniel Corcoran, and Harris Michael Corcoran. Beloved sister of Patricia Harris-Zucker and Carl Cox.
She was the past president of the Gloucester City Historical Society and co-chaired the bicentennial celebration with her husband, John. Joan was a Sunday school teacher and soloist for St Mary’s Church, The Lewis Shearer Choral, and The Gloucester City Community Choir. She was a proud volunteer with the Special Olympics and Girl Scouts, where she received the Camden County Girl Scouts Ambassador Gold Award. Over the years, she and her husband, John, fostered many children and refurbished Union Cemetery on Powell Street. She was instrumental in getting the playground built on Johnson Blvd.
Joan and her husband loved Gloucester City, and they proved it by their actions. Joan was quoted saying, “It only takes a few dedicated people to change the face of a community. We cannot climb a rope that is only attached to our own belt.”
Her family will forever remember her love for family, music, art, and giving back to the community.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday morning, November 29th between 10:15-10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. A memorial tribute slideshow will be viewed at 10:45 AM, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Gloucester City.
