Bridge to be detoured for several months

The Route 44 Drawbridge over Mantua Creek between Paulsboro and West Deptford in Gloucester County is scheduled to be closed for several months starting on Monday for preventive maintenance.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, November 4, Route 44 is scheduled to be closed and detoured in both directions between Mantua Grove Road in West Deptford and North Commerce Street in Paulsboro. The closure is necessary to make mechanical repairs to the drawbridge components and to paint the bridge. Work is expected to be complete in spring 2025. The following detours will be in place:
Route 44/Crown Point Road southbound from West Deptford to Paulsboro Detour:
- Motorists on Route 44 southbound will be directed to turn left onto Mantua Grove Road
- Turn left to take the ramp to I-295 southbound
- Take Exit 18/Paulsboro/Mt. Royal/Clarksboro
- Turn left onto S. Delaware Street
- Turn left on Route 44/Broad Street southbound
Route 44/Broad Street northbound from Paulsboro to West Deptford Detour:
- Motorists on Route 44/Broad Street northbound will be directed to turn right onto S. Delaware Street
- Turn left to take the ramp to I-295 northbound
- Take Exit 19/Mantua
- Turn left onto Mantua Grove Road
- Turn right on Route 44 northbound
The work is part of a $16.4 million drawbridge preventative maintenance contract for the South Region, focusing on improvements to any of the 10 state-maintained drawbridges and fixed bridges, as necessary. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
