Authorities Arrest Alleged Murderer Hakeem Denby, 41, of Vineland

VINELAND, NJ --Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and the New Jersey State Police announced today the arrest of Hakeem Denby, 34, a resident of Vineland, in connection with the murder of Daquann Smith. Denby has been charged with murder and multiple weapons offenses following a joint investigation by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit. Law enforcement agencies worked collaboratively to gather evidence and pursue leads, ultimately leading to Denby’s arrest.

Prosecutor Sutherland praised the efforts of both the New Jersey State Police and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, whose partnership and dedication were instrumental in bringing about this arrest. “We remain committed to ensuring justice for Mr. Smith and providing his family and loved ones with some measure of closure,” said Prosecutor Sutherland.

Denby was charged with Murder (Purposely and/or knowingly causing Death), a crime of the First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a Crime of the Second Degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, a Crime of the Second Degree; Certain Person not to Possess a Weapon, a Crime of the Second Degree.

If convicted, Denby faces a prison sentence of 30 years to life in prison, without the possibility of parole for 30 years.
