How to make a difference during Alzheimer's Disease Awareness and Family Caregivers Month

Alziem

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month. To mark these moments, we’re encouraging people to lend a helping hand to the more than 700,000 family members and friends in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania who serve as unpaid Alzheimer’s caregivers. If you are caring for a loved one with dementia, you can turn to the resources and support services offered by the Alzheimer’s Association.
Whether you are a caregiver or you know someone who is, one of the easiest ways to make a difference is through education. Learn about Alzheimer’s disease—its symptoms, its progression and the common challenges caregivers face. The more you know, the easier it will be to find and offer help. A partial list of education offerings for November is below.
Other ways to make a difference:
  • Check in with a phone call, send a note or stop by for a visit. These small gestures can make a big difference in a caregiver’s day, and help them feel supported. (Other ways to be supportive can be found here.)
  • Offer help during the holidays. Assistance with cooking, cleaning or gift shopping— even offering to host celebrations—can be helpful. If you are a caregiver, reach out to others for help and remember to use the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900) for emotional support and practical caregiver tips and best practices.  (Find additional holiday tips here.)
  • Join the fight. Honor a person living with the disease and their caregiver by joining the fight against Alzheimer’s. You can volunteer by participating in fundraising events such as Walk to End Alzheimer’s and The Longest Dayadvocate for more research funding, or sign up to participate in a clinical study through the Alzheimer's Association’s TrialMatch
