PHILADELPHIA (September 30, 2024)--– U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Philadelphia seized three parcels in September of xylazine, an animal tranquilizer that authorities report is being cut more frequently with fentanyl and other dangerous drugs to deadly effect. Xylazine does not respond to Narcan. CBP officers seized the most recent parcel on Thursday after it arrived in express air delivery from Spain. The parcel, which was destined to an address in Philadelphia, was manifested as “mica powder for makeup.” The parcel contained a white, powdery substance that tested positive for xylazine hydrochloride using a handheld elemental isotope analysis tool. The xylazine weighed 1.04 kilograms, or nearly two pounds and five ounces. CBP officers also seized 1.02 kilograms of xylazine on September 16, and 1.075 kilograms on September 5. ILA’s “Big Jack” Pennington Writes Searing Essay on Facebook About Threat of Automation

NORTH BERGEN, NJ (September 30, 2024) In an inspiring and fighting Facebook post today, Jack Pennington, President, Local 28, International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) described in succinct language the dire threat for ILA Longshore workers and their future with automation, and why it’s critical for the union to fight for strong language in the next Master Contract to make sure it is never implemented at Eastern and Gulf Coast Ports. ILA International President Harold Daggett loved the post and hopes every ILA member and family reads it. President Daggett’s response started with “Hey Jack, thank you thank you thank you. ILA Update – Monday, September 30, 2024 at 11 am September 30, 2024 NORTH BERGEN, NJ – (September 30, 2024) The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) reports that United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) continues to block the path toward a settlement on a new Master Contract by refusing ILA’s demands for a fair and decent contract and seems intent on causing a strike at all ports from Maine to Texas beginning in almost 12 hours. “The Ocean Carriers represented by USMX want to enjoy rich billion-dollar profits that they are making in 2024, while they offer ILA Longshore Workers an unacceptable wage package that we reject”, the ILA said. “ILA longshore workers deserve to be compensated for the important work they do keeping American commerce moving and growing. It’s disgraceful that most of these foreign-owned shipping companies are engaged in a ‘Make and Take’ operation: They want to make their billion-dollar... Read more →

GUEST COLUMN: New Drug Pricing Policy Could Raise Cost for Millions

By Ken Thorpe Healthcare costs are one of Americans' top concerns as we head into election season. The IRA directs Medicare to negotiate the price of certain medicines for the first time ever. Unfortunately, for some seniors living with chronic diseases, this particular reform may actually lead to higher out-of-pocket costs. According to a new study from Milliman, Medicare price negotiations could unintentionally raise pharmacy costs for millions of beneficiaries by reducing the amount of drug spending that can be counted toward the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap. It's troubling that among Americans over 64, a full 25% struggle to afford their medicines, according to a poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation. A separate analysis by the Department of Health and Human Services put the number of Medicare patients struggling with pharmacy costs at more than three million in 2019. Consider the experience of a Medicare patient who takes a $1,000-per-month brand-name... Read more →

Letter to the Editor: OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE OR SOME PEOPLE LOVE MY ART WORK

I never saw myself as an artist, but it seems that my handmade painting of a political Trump sign had a powerful impact on some people. They admired it so much that they felt compelled to take it, not just once, but multiple times. Let me explain further. In 2016, while living in the politically liberal town of Glassboro, my Trump sign, proudly displayed in my front yard, was brazenly stolen under the cover of night. Undeterred, I promptly put up another Trump/Pence sign and lit my front yard with a bright light, hoping to prevent any further theft. However, to my dismay, the sign was stolen again at night. Motivated by a mixture of anger and frustration, I promptly entered my dependable plumbing van and made a beeline for The Home Depot. There, I purchased a four-foot by eight-foot sheet of 3/4-inch pressure-treated plywood and red, white, and blue... Read more →

American Legion Praises Senator Tester for Protecting Veterans Benefits

The passage of the Supplemental Appropriations Act, an American Legion priority, ensured that veterans would not miss any payouts due to the VA budget shortfall. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont. The American Legion thanked Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., for his leadership in protecting veterans’ benefits by steering the Veterans Benefits Continuity and Accountability Supplemental Appropriations Act toward reality. During the summer, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) had reported a $3 billion budget shortfall this year and a $12 billion shortfall next year. If unresolved, the gap would have meant veterans would stop receiving benefits as of Oct. 1. Tester’s bill averted that scenario as it passed Congress and was signed into law by the president. American Legion National Commander James A. LaCoursiere praised Tester, other members of Congress and other veterans service organizations (VSOs). “Without Sen. Tester’s leadership, our nation’s veterans would be facing severe financial consequences right now,” LaCoursiere... Read more →

Vaping is Dangerous and Could Cause Cancer and other Life-Threatening Illnesses.

Newswise — ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 15, 2024 – College students who vaped had lower cognitive function scores than those who didn’t, and the more they vaped, the bigger the disparity, according to first-of-its-kind research being presented at the 149th Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association (ANA). The study also found college students who vaped and smoked had the lowest scores. While using electronic cigarettes (vaping) has been shown to cause lung damage, the research presented at ANA is groundbreaking because there is little to no information on vaping’s relationship to cognitive function, such as learning, memory, problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making. Cognitive testing is rarely performed in young people. “People in the study who had previously smoked cigarettes typically smoked three or four a week, but with vaping, they now smoke double, triple, or more, especially if they smoke and vape,” said Linker Viñan Paucar, lead author of the...
