GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (August 8, 2024)--On May 18, 2012, The City of Gloucester City, along with members of the Gloucester City Police Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 40, honored Officer Frederick Blackburn, the only Gloucester City Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty in the history of the local police department. A hit-and-run driver struck Blackburn on March 6, 1946, as he walked his beat at the intersection of Cumberland and Atlantic Street. He succumbed to internal injuries eight days later.
Blackburn, who was 75 years old, had served as a Patrolman for 34 years. He was survived by his wife and six children. Mayor William James apologized to the family on behalf of the citizens of Gloucester City for taking 66 years to honor their grandfather and cousin.
Gloucester City Police Chief George Berglund was the MC. Patrolman Wm. Johnson and Sgt. Jason Flood organized the event.
