Jefferson Washington Township Hospital Approved to Perform Elective Angioplasty
Wednesday, August 07, 2024
Jefferson Washington Township Hospital recently received formal approval from the New Jersey Department of Health to perform elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) — also known as elective angioplasty — a lifesaving procedure to prevent heart attacks. PCI, usually performed following a diagnostic cardiac catheterization, provides patients relief from symptoms of obstructed arteries without the need for invasive heart surgery.
This approval comes a year after the hospital was approved by the state to offer PCI (angioplasty) for patients experiencing the most severe type of heart attack -- ST elevated myocardial infarction, or STEMI. More than 100 patients have undergone the emergency procedure at the hospital since August 1, 2023.
“With Jefferson Washington Township Hospital now performing elective PCI, patients can receive lifesaving care closer to home,” said Kartik Giri, MD, Medical Director of the hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab. “In the past, our patients needing angioplasty following a cardiac cath procedure would have to travel to another hospital, but having elective angioplasty in-house means a streamlined experience that can lead to shorter hospital stays and better outcomes.”
