AUGUST 23, 2024
 
On Friday, August 23, 2024, at 10:25 pm, officers from the 24th District responded to a radio call for a "Person with a Gun" at Kensington Avenue and Tusculum Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 35-year-old victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was transported to Temple Hospital by police, where he was pronounced dead at 10:56 pm.

Homicide Investigation
AUGUST 23, 2024
 
On August 23, 2024, at approximately 6:19 pm, officers from the 9th District responded to a call for a "Person with a Gun" at 6XX N. 12th Street. Upon arrival, officers located two shooting victims: a 9-year-old boy who had been shot once in the right leg and a 33-year-old male who had been shot multiple times in the torso. Both victims were transported to Thomas Jefferson Hospital by police. The 33-year-old male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:31 pm. 
 
Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was standing on the highway at 6XX N. 12th Street when a black Jeep pulled up, and two unknown males exited the vehicle and chased him with guns. The deceased attempted to enter a vehicle that was stopped on the highway, where the 9-year-old boy was inside. The offenders began shooting at the deceased, causing the 9-year-old to flee the vehicle. The deceased pulled out a firearm and fired back at the offenders as they fled in their vehicle.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2024
HOMICIDE BY SHOOTING
 
A homicide by shooting occurred in the 35th District at 55XX N 6th St on the highway at 3:34 PM. A 25-year-old Black male was shot multiple times in the chest and right hand. He was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center by a private vehicle and was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM. The scene is currently being held, with no apprehensions made and no weapons recovered at this time.

Tragic Fire in the 24th District Results in One Fatality; Suspect Arrested and Charged
 
Philadelphia, PA – August 23, 2024: In the early hours of Friday, August 23, 2024, a devastating fire broke out in the 1800 block of East Russell Street. At approximately 4:32 AM, officers from the 24th District, along with members of the Philadelphia Fire Department, responded to a report of people trapped at the location. Upon arrival, officers observed individuals on the roof of the residence. Firefighters successfully rescued the family members, who then informed them that their mother was still inside the home.
 
Firefighters located the victim, later identified as 66-year-old Evelyn Payne, unresponsive in the front second-floor bedroom. Despite efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:28 AM by Medic 58. The fire, which spread to several neighboring homes, caused significant damage and loss.
 
A male suspect was taken into custody at the scene. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shadeek McDowell, has been charged with Murder, Arson, five counts of Aggravated Assault, five counts of Simple Assault, and related offenses.
 
Fatal House Fire  
 
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 7:33 am, officers from the 2nd District and members of the Philadelphia Fire Department responded to a house fire at 9XX Granite Street. Upon arrival, six people were inside the residence. An 8-year-old Hispanic female and a 31-year-old Hispanic female were pronounced dead at the scene by medics. A 9-year-old Hispanic male was transported to St. Christopher's Hospital by Medic #42 in critical condition with burns to his arms, legs, and back. A 32-year-old Hispanic male was transported to Temple University Hospital by Medic #46 in critical condition with burns to his face and back. A 28-year-old Hispanic male sustained a burn to his hand. An adult Hispanic male fled the scene, and his identity and whereabouts are currently unknown. The fire has been brought under control, and the scene is being held for further investigation by Northeast Detectives and the Philadelphia Fire Marshal's Office to determine the cause of the fire.
 
Shooting Investigation
 
On August 24, 2024, at 4:51 am, officers from the 2nd District responded to a shooting on the highway at 59XX Colgate Street. A 22-year-old Hispanic male had been shot once in the left elbow. He was transported to Einstein Medical Center by police and is in stable condition. The scene is being held, and no weapons were recovered. However, a person of interest has been taken into custody for further investigation.

Homicide Investigation
 
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 2:17 am, officers from the 15th District responded to multiple calls reporting a "Person with a Gun" at 26XX Rhawn Street. Before police arrived, an unknown private vehicle transported a shooting victim to Nazareth Hospital, where he was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The 28-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at 2:41 am. 
 
Currently, there is no known motive or suspect in custody. The investigation is ongoing with the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit. Double Stabbing Investigation
 
On August 24, 2024, at 12:18 am, officers from the 25th District responded to a stabbing at 1XX W. Gurney Street. A 47-year-old male was stabbed twice in the right thigh and transported to Temple Hospital by Medic 58 in stable condition. A 41-year-old male was stabbed multiple times throughout his body and was transported to Temple Hospital by Medic 8 in critical condition. No scene has been located, no weapons have been recovered, and no arrests have been made.

FATAL CRASH intersection of W. Lehigh Ave and W. Sedgley Ave.

 

On Saturday, August 24, 2024, at around 12:10 pm, a fatal crash occurred in the 22nd District at the intersection of W. Lehigh Ave and W. Sedgley Ave.

 

According to the preliminary investigation, Unit #1, a PFD Ladder, was heading west on Lehigh Ave on its way to an assignment. Unit #2 was traveling north on Sedgley Ave when its operator cut in front of Unit #1, resulting in a collision. This caused Unit #2 to strike a parked, unattended vehicle, identified as Unit #3. The operator and passenger of Unit #2 were taken to Temple Hospital. The male 29-year-old male operator is listed in critical condition, while the 23-year-old  female passenger of Unit #2 was pronounced dead at Temple Hospital at 12:44 pm.

 

The investigation is ongoing with the Crash Investigation Division. 

 

AUGUST 24, 2024
29-YEAR-OLD BLACK MALE SHOT
 
 
At 1:14 PM in the 18th District, near 56th and Walnut on the highway, a 29-year-old Black male was shot once in the lower left side of his back by an unknown offender. He was transported to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center by police and is in stable condition. The scene is being held, and no arrests have been made, nor has a weapon been recovered.
