Maxine Alexander, age 80

Ms. Maxine Alexander gained her eternal independence on July 4, 2024, at the age of 80 years old. She was born on February 12, 1944, in Portsmouth, Va. to parents Dorothy Louise Harrell Alexander (Docey), and James Pittman Alexander (JP).
Ms. Alexander was a trailblazer, graduating as one of the first Black students from the High School of Fashion Industry in New York. She continued her education at City College, New York and beloved HBCU Shaw University and became an accomplished anthropologist and writer. Ms. Alexander worked as an editor for the progressive magazine "Southern Exposure" and created the book "Speaking for Ourselves." Maxine, during a union with NEA Jazz Master, Saxophonist Gary Bartz, birthed her one and only child, Taifa Harmony Bartz.
Maxine was a truly one-of-a-kind spirit who will be remembered for her focused passion, intelligence, unique insight, and dedication to amplifying the voices of others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Maxine Alexander was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers, Jerome "Jeru" Alexander, Tony Alexander and Chris Jackson. She is survived by her daughter, Taifa Harmony Bartz and three grandchildren: Omar Danté Smith, Ayana Smith, and Hakim Bartz. She is also survived by her nephews Chris Alexander and Billy Alexander, niece Julie Alexander, grandnieces Ellen Hodge, Emily Hodge, Elizabeth Hodge and Ebhlainn Hodge, and great grandnephew Ethan Rodriguez along with many other loving friends and family members.
Maxine’s Homegoing Ceremony was held on Thursday, July 18th at Canaan Baptist Church, 132 W 116th St, New York, NY 10026.
