Sunday, June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Camden County, N.J.- Saturday, June 15, 2024, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Each year hundreds of thousands of aging individuals are subjected to elder abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is an annual initiative that was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

The New Jersey Division of Aging Services defines Elder Abuse as any “knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult.” Elder Abuse includes physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Many elderly individuals are vulnerable, frail and rely on others to assist them with their most basic needs. Elder Abuse can be carried out by family members, trusted friends, or even professionals hired to provide care.

How to Spot Elder Abuse

The signs of Elder Abuse can be subtle. Any of the following can be a cause for concern:

◼ Physical signs including unexplained bruises, bed sores, or sexually transmitted diseases.

◼ Poor hygiene or nutrition and unsafe or unclean living conditions.

◼ Missing medical aids like glasses, dentures, hearing aids, a walker, etc.

◼ Increased fear, anxiety, or sadness.

◼ Isolation or withdrawal from normal activities.

◼ Unusual changes to financial arrangements: bank accounts, money management services, wills or trusts.

◼ Unpaid bills or fraudulent signatures on financial documents.
