Comptroller's Audit in 2021 Lambast Norcross Insurance Brokerage for $1.6 Million Mistake

N.J. audit slams Norcross-headed insurance broker for school contract by Dana DiFilippo, New Jersey Monitor December 10, 2021 The insurance brokerage helmed by Democratic power broker George Norcross erred in its analysis of health insurance plans for Pennsauken Public Schools employees, costing the district $1.6 million in potential savings, according to an audit released Friday by the New Jersey State Comptroller’s Office. The 4,700-student school district in Camden County relied on an analysis done by Conner Strong & Buckelew — where Norcross is executive chair — in choosing an insurance company for its employees in fiscal years 2014 and 2015, according to the report. But the firm underestimated the cost of a private plan and compared two plans with disparate insurance coverage in its analysis, investigators said. The firm also didn’t report its commission to the district as required by law, nor factor its commission into the cost analysis, the... Read more →

THE SOUTH JERSEY SCOOP:

by Rep. Jefferson Van Drew (R)

Rep. Van Drew Questions Secretary Buttigieg on Offshore Wind This week, I had the opportunity to question Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg at a House Transportation and Infrastructure hearing. I questioned him on whether the Department of Transportation (DOT) was doing enough to ensure safety is a priority in areas where offshore wind farms are being constructed. Despite major concerns over maritime and aerial safety, these projects are being pushed forward before adequate safety impact studies have been conducted. I pressed Secretary Buttigieg to ensure safety is prioritized before proceeding with further construction. These projects will result in the permanent industrialization of our shores, so it is crucial that their impacts are thoroughly studied before any construction begins. Click here to watch my full line of questioning. This week, I voted in favor of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024. This bill will have a major impact in... Read more →

Who Won The Presidential Debate?

Biden and Trump trade insults, accusations of lying in acrimonious presidential debate by Jennifer Shutt, New Jersey Monitor June 27, 2024 President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump pitched to undecided voters Thursday night during the first debate of the presidential campaign — trading insults over their policy differences, immigration and who represents a threat to democracy. During the debate from CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta, the two men argued over who can do better for Americans during the next four years on a broad swath of issues, ranging from the economy to climate change to foreign policy. Each repeatedly accused the other of lying. Biden early in the debate spoke softly at several points, coughed and gave several somewhat confusing answers. At one point, Biden appeared to lose his train of thought and ended an answer with the statement that “we finally beat Medicare.” The two disagreed sharply over... Read more →

New Jersey Senate Committee Approves Bill to Ban Smoking in Casinos Amidst Atlantic City Controversy

Powered-on no smoking box photo – Free Sign Image on Unsplash In a move that could reshape the gaming landscape of Atlantic City, the New Jersey Senate Health Committee has given the green light to a bill aimed at banning smoking in all nine of the city's iconic casinos. The decision, however, has sparked intense debate and raised concerns among stakeholders, including casino operators and workers. New Jersey is home to in-person casinos and is one of the limited 7 states in the US that also allows online gambling. In the US, online gambling and online poker sites have been becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Some believe this is due to the number of games and variations they offer while others believe it’s due to the accessibility and convenience. Recent news from New Jersey has shown that online gambling revenue is skyrocketing, while in-person gambling is declining. This recent... Read more →
