Join SPJ for Sunshine Week starting Sunday! Explore the Sunshine Week website for all things freedom of information related. See what the Freedom of Information Act is and why it matters and learn more about our right to know.

Follow #SunshineWeek or @SunshineWeek for open government columns, op-eds, cartoons or graphics. SPJ will be posting special columns from the SPJ Freedom of Information Committee on SPJ.org. Plus, use the toolkit with sample posts and graphics. This is a time to share why freedom of information is so important, whether you're a journalist or not.

SPJ will also be hosting events all week long! If you have FOI event happening during Sunshine Week, please add it to SPJ’s events calendar. Make sure to register for these SPJ events happening during Sunshine Week:

A Sunshine Week Discussion with Laura Mollo, the 'FOIA Lady' at 7:30 p.m. EDT Monday — Join SPJ New England and the SPJ Freedom of Information Committee for a discussion with Laura Mollo, a stay-at-home mom who used FOI to enact change in her Virginia community.

FOIA 101: A Public Records Primer for Everyone at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday— Join SPJ and MuckRock for a webinar to walk through the basics of what you need to know about public records as well as strategies that even veterans will find useful.

A Discussion with SPJ Sunshine Award Winner City Bureau at 3 p.m. EDT Thursday — City Bureau won a 2023 SPJ Sunshine Award for Documenters.org, which collects public meeting data across government websites. SPJ presents this discussion on the importance of open public meetings.

FOIA Rights and Guidelines for College Students at 5 p.m. EDT Thursday — If you’re a college journalist who is unfamiliar with FOI laws or need help submitting a records request, SPJ and SPLC will give you a step-by-step guide.

The Black Hole Award recipient will also be announced during Sunshine Week! Stay tuned to find out who "won" the award, highlighting the most heinous violations of the public's right to know.
