Newswise — A new study from researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions and Vanderbilt University found that an average of 1,769 people were injured annually in police shootings from 2015 to 2020, 55 percent of them or 979 people, fatally. Fourteen years ago, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law – extending quality, affordable health care coverage to millions of Americans with the stroke of a pen. In the years since, this historic legislation has decreased income inequality, protected people with pre-existing conditions from discrimination, increased access to preventative care like cancer screenings and vaccinations, and saved lives. Health care is a fundamental right, and I’m working every day to strengthen the ACA, lower health care costs, and build a future where no one has to choose between visiting the doctor, paying the bills, or putting food on the table. I was proud to help pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which is delivering health care savings for seniors on Medicare with insulin capped at $35 a month, free vaccines, and out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs capped at $2,000 starting in 2025. For the first time...

An outdoor kitchen is a deck- or patio-based grilling area having a few amenities of a simple indoor kitchen, like cooking appliances, a dedicated eating area and storage cabinets. An outdoor kitchen can also have other utilities, such as gas lines and electricity, and the more elaborate ones might include running water and sinks. By Slim Randles Life in a small town means everybody knows what’s going on, good or bad. Just take what happened to Dud the other day. It was trash day, and the trash barrels were on the street waiting to be emptied into the weekly truck. Dudley Campbell was no different from his neighbors, having his cans at the curbside ready for a trip to the dump. His wife, Anita, had driven to the city to do some shopping, so Dud was home alone. And probably that’s why he felt secure in going through his own garbage. First, he spread a tarp out on the ground next to the cans and then dove in. He resembled a badger trying to dig up a squirrel as he went lower and lower in the garbage can and the pile on the tarp grew larger. Mrs. Miller lived just across the street from...

Source: Unsplash When people think of the pinnacle of American sporting events, attention naturally turns towards the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup and World Series. And it's easy to see why those four are the crown jewels of stateside sports. Patrick Mahomes delivered one of the all-time great performances in the former of the four last month as he guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a dramatic second straight Lombardi. But outside of them, what else is there to get excited about? Well, horse racing has been around for literal centuries, and few traditions are as steeped in history and prestige as the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, a trifecta of the country's most challenging races: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby, often referred to as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports," is the first jewel in the...

While upsets and underdog stories attract casual fans, the tournament has also witnessed some of the most memorable individual performances in basketball history. Let's take a look at some of the most dynamic players in the NCAA Tournament. At the top of the list is Lew Alcindor, who later became known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in his career. He played for UCLA under coach John Wooden and led the Bruins to three consecutive national titles from 1967-1969. Alcindor was awarded the Most Outstanding Player each season due to his remarkable performance. His total dominance in the game led to rule changes, and the dunk was banned for years after his arrival. This article was first published in November 2013 By JOHN REYNOLDS Diary of a Madman Browsing the web the other day, checking up on the goings-on around town on my favorite local website, I was saddened to learn that after October 31, 2013, Bill Cleary will stop publishing new content to his site, ClearysNoteBook. The only independently run, small-town news source in South Jersey is shutting down. His site's been running since 2006 when he launched ClearysNoteBook onto the Internet after spending almost 40 years in the newspaper business in Gloucester City. Bill must be past retirement age, so I wasn't surprised he's finally taking a break. Running a one-man newspaper shop consumes a lot of time and energy, even for a young guy. He was nearing retirement when he started his site, which is amazing, considering the learning curve involved in going from print to digital publishing. And he...

TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Forest Fire Service and local officials today showcased a partnership with the Department of Defense that is helping to protect properties adjacent to military installations in the Pinelands from the increased risks of wildfire due to a changing climate. The officials toured a strategic forest fuel break in Manchester Township, Ocean County, one of three wildfire resilience projects in the Pinelands funded through the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Challenge Program. REPI facilitates long-term partnerships to improve resilience to climate change, preserve wildlife habitats and natural resources and promote sustainable land uses near military installations and ranges. Members of the Forest Fire Service also provided a demonstration of prescribed burning, one of the strategies used to help maintain the effectiveness of fuel breaks. “Fighting wildfires in places such as the Pinelands has become increasingly challenging...

Officers arrived on location to observe a large gathering from a car show. This was later found to be advertised on social media as “Mega Meet; New York VS New Jersey VS Pennsylvania”. It should be noted that this event did not include any official notifications to the Berlin Police Department due to the obvious concern of crowd and vehicle control. Numerous officers arrived shortly after, and they found the parking lot overflowing, causing major transit issues on White Horse Pike, Lanesboro Road, Florence Avenue, and surrounding businesses. Vehicles were found parking on the sidewalks, shoulders, and grass areas of multiple surrounding streets and parking lots,...
