Robert G. McQuillan, age 92, Legendary Teacher and Coach at GCHS and GHS

Robert G. McQuillan peacefully passed away on January 28th, 2024, at the age of 92. He will be reunited with his beloved wife of 63 years, Frances Burke McQuillan. Robert was the loving father of Robert K. McQuillan and Daniel B. McQuillan and grandfather of Carson McQuillan and Brenna McQuillan. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Denise McQuillan, and Ami Feller.
God broke the mold with Robert. He grew up on King Street in Gloucester City and was a standout athlete at Gloucester Catholic. He served in the United States Army, then began his teaching career at Gloucester Junior High School as an 8th-grade history teacher before returning to his alma mater, Gloucester Catholic, to coach football where he led the Rams to an undefeated 1971-72 season. Because of his successful run, Robert was named the South Jersey Coach of the Year, only to be followed by an induction into the South Jersey Sports Hall of Fame. A legendary teacher and coach, Robert was a positive influence on many students at Gloucester Junior and Senior High Schools, as well as Gloucester Catholic.
Prior to retiring, Robert coached football at Widener University, and was the defensive coordinator for two National Championship Teams. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but his lasting legacy was making an impact on his students/players, both on and off the field.
Family and friends are invited to attend Robert's viewing on Friday, February 2, 2024, from 5-8PM, at St. Mary of the Lakes Church, 40 Jackson Road, Medford, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 12PM, at the church.
Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 515 W. Browning Road, Bellmawr, NJ. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's memory to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org . All arrangements are under the care and direction of the Mathis Funeral Home, Medford, NJ.
