Philly AIDS Thrift Announces $324K in New Grants and Reaches New Milestone

Philadelphia's non-profit thrift store transforms donated treasures into much-needed funding for local communities and neighborhoods affected by HIV/AIDS.

Philadelphia, PA - Philly AIDS Thrift and Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room are thrilled to award $324,000+ in grants for 31 HIV/AIDS service organizations and their programs that are centered on prevention and care in the Delaware Valley.  This much-needed grant funding is more crucial than ever. Nonprofits throughout the country have been challenged by budget cuts, dwindling donations and other economic factors. The new donations will bring the group's lifetime total to a major new milestone. As of this week, Philly AIDS Thrift celebrates turning donated treasures into $4.6M in donations and grant awards since the group started in 2014.  For more about Philly AIDS Thrift, the celebration and the grant program, visit phillyaidsthrift.com and @phillyaidsthrift on social media.

“This is by far my favorite moment of the entire year! To be able to have such a profound impact on programs that are doing tremendous work on behalf of individuals and communities impacted by HIV/AIDS across the Delaware Valley is truly humbling,” says Philly AIDS Thrift Board President, Michael Byrne. “We are forever grateful for our staff, our volunteers, our donors, and our loyal customers - thank you sincerely from the bottom of our hearts!”

Philly AIDS Thrift’s Cofounder/Executive Director, Christina Kallas-Saritsoglou remarks, “It is amazing to all of us that we have surpassed the milestone of giving away over $4.6 million dollars since our inception. Our staff and volunteers work very hard every day to make sure that we can make the biggest difference possible in the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. We could not do it without our generous donors and enthusiastic shoppers.”

As the winter season ends and spring-cleaning approaches, Philly AIDS Thrift encourages everyone to consider donating gently-used items they no longer need. Your contributions generate the proceeds and funds awarded in future grant cycles.

ABOUT PHILLY AIDS THRIFT AND PHILLY AIDS THRIFT @ GIOVANNI’S ROOM

Founded in 2005, Philadelphia AIDS Thrift is incorporated in Pennsylvania as a non-profit business and is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. Philly AIDS Thrift’s mission is to support local communities affected by HIV/AIDS through the operation of its fabulous retail thrift stores. So far, they have donated $4,620,766.40 to funding programs focused on HIV prevention, care, and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. Philly AIDS Thrift features thousands of items on three floors in the heart of the South Street Headhouse District.

In 2014, Philly AIDS Thrift took over the operation of Giovanni’s Room, the oldest LGBT & Feminist bookstore in the nation. The organization renamed the business, Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room, honoring the 50-year legacy. In 2018, they were able to purchase the building—securing the historic bookstore for future generations. Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room, features thrift items, as well as, used and new books.

In 2015, Philly AIDS Thrift launched an HIV testing center inside their retail store. Testing is done clinically and professionally with various HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations to provide free, drop-in, rapid testing, and related counseling services. The testing room helps to normalize HIV testing and remove stigma by providing an alternative for those who may find a clinical setting frightening.

In addition to monetary contributions, Philly AIDS Thrift provides store vouchers to Philly area HIV/AIDS service providers for clients in need of clothing and household necessities.

Proceeds from all of Philly AIDS Thrift operations are still growing. Both stores run with support from amazing volunteers and donations from the public. All funding and services are made possible through our generous donors.

Shopping hours for the store are Monday to Saturday, from 11:00am to 8:00pm, and Sunday 11:00am to 7:00pm.
