THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

Did You Ever Wonder...

Dorothy Philbin l CNBNewsnet Columnist Image courtesy of Paramount Pictures How many shipwrecks are there on the ocean floor? It might be a strange question but take a minute and think about it. How many ships can you name which are sitting at the bottom of the ocean? Everyone knows about the Titanic, "Remember The Maine" (Spanish-American War,) The Hood (WW II British ship sunk by the German ship The Bismark,) then there is the German ship The Bismark, sunk by the British. As the saying goes, revenge is a dish better served cold. Now finding sunken ships is easier than before. SONAR, digital archives, and Remotely-Operated Vehicles have all made traveling to the ocean's floor much less dangerous. So, if you can find the money - you can find a shipwreck. Don't forget all those ships from the 1400s, 1500s and 1600s believed to be filled with gold and... Read more →

CNBNews January 2024 Cheers and Jeers

COMPILED BY CNBNEWS JEER: Don't look for fewer taxes in New Jersey. You drive from Exit 3 on the NJ Turnpike 5.5 miles to Pennsauken, and you go through eight communities that have their own police departments. They justify their existence by writing moving violation tickets. Most states have consolidated community law enforcement with county police forces, saving huge amounts of money without threatening public safety. Why can't good old New Jersey do this? Politics is the cause. Public unions control our elected officials. Nobody is looking out for your hard-earned tax dollars. Leaving New Jersey! CHEER: To the end of our two-year snow drought. It was wonderful to see the children outside playing in the snow this week. CHEER: To all the good citizens out there who helped their neighbors during and after the snowstorm - shoveling sidewalks, checking on seniors, helping out without being asked- your acts of... The law states "to make the completion of a financial aid application form a prerequisite to graduation for public high school and charter school students in New Jersey." Gloucester City High School just got a long-awaited and badly needed center for trades programs for those who don't want to go to college but want to learn entry-level skills for carpentry, plumbing, auto mechanics, etc. Well, that doesn't matter. You and your student both have file student aid applications. No More Sport's Illustrated! Say It Isn’ t So

Friday, January 19, 2024 all of Sports Illustration employees were given their pink slips. Every last one is gone. It seems that a company which has a contractual agreement to allow Sports Illustration to publish is due $3.75 million each quarter (three months.) They have not been this quarter and they are invoking their contract which permits them to shut down the magazine. Will Sports Illustrated come back? That is a maybe, but probably not. The magazine has to find a bank or very rich person to lend them the $3.75 million plus any other bills they owe and then have an additional $3.75 million ready for this quarter. Never say never, but it isn't likely. _____________________... Read more →

Dear American Legion Family members and friends,

Once again, the Department of Defense (DoD) may be faced with another continuing resolution (CR), which would compromise national defense strategy and undermine improving quality of life issues for servicemembers. In essence, a CR would cap funding at the previous year's levels, providing none of the approved increases and preventing any new programs from beginning that were authorized in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024. This comes at a time when America is facing multiple national security threats such as China’s aggression, Russian provocation and the possibility of the Israel-Hamas war spreading. It is not the time to be reducing our military capability. But that is exactly what the CR would do. Consider this: Under a CR, our nation’s defense programs would receive $26.6 billion (3%) less than the $886.3 billion authorized by the NDAA. This stop-start-stop-start game also disrupts the hard-working employees of DoD, as well... Read more →

Home Country: The Dewey Decimal System

BY Slim Randles Some of the earlier knights of the coffee table arrived just before daylight, flipping their cups to the upright and fillable positions, and were joined quickly by Dewey, which is an unusual occurrence. Doc was the only one of us downwind from Dewey, and we watched to see if any fainting took place, but evidently, Dewey had not yet begun his job of transferring soil nutrients from the dairies to people’s yards. “How’s it going, Dewey?” Dud said. We all like Dewey. “Finer’n frog hair, Dud. My shoulder’s in shape for a shovel, and I’m sure gonna shovel…” “Well, yes, you are,” Doc said quickly. “Dewey’s an interesting name,” Dud said. “Was your mother … dewy-eyed when you were born?” “That’s D-E-W-Y. My name has the extra e in it. Actually, I was named for a famous man.” We sipped over that one for a minute. “Thomas... Read more →
