WE LOSE A FIRST LADY

(CNBNews)(November 19, 2023)--Roselynn Carter, our First Lady from 1977 to 1981 and wife of former President Jimmy Carter, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the age of 96.  She and her husband were married 77 years, longer than any other presidential couple.

While she was campaigning for husband, she went to Chillicothe, Ohio.  Someone in the crowd remarked that Roselynn was down to earth.  She wore a cotton dress and a Timex watch.  Her attire was probably planned as Chillicothe is a middle-class town.  However, in an interview a short time later she said the one thing she would bring to the White House from her home was her sewing machine.  So, maybe she was that middle class.

While they were in the White House the couple never served hard liquor, but sometimes they served American-made wine.  Where other Presidents would have formal balls when entertaining foreign officials, the Carters would often have picnics and square dances.

Roselynn, whatever the appearance, was a very strong woman.  She sat in on all Cabinet meetings and, behind the couple's back, the Secret Service agents called her "the co-president."  At one point she made a public statement "I am not running the country."

Her husband, Jimmy, only served one term.  In the 1980 election, they lost to President Ronald Reagan.  Jimmy is now 99 years old, the oldest former President ever.  He is currently on hospice service at home in Plains, Ga.
