GOOD NEWS: Virtua Health Distributing 1200 Turkeys Plus Produce

In preparation for Thanksgiving, Virtua Health will give away frozen turkeys and fresh produce to local families – 350 in Burlington County and 350 in Camden County – who otherwise might not be able to afford them. Plus, for the first time, Virtua will distribute 500 turkeys and accompanying produce in Atlantic City.

The not-for-profit health system will hold a drive-thru giveaway at Virtua Willingboro Hospital, and a walk-up event at the Virtua Health & Wellness Center - Camden. Virtua senior leaders and other staff will work as volunteers at all three events. Each person or family will receive a 12- to 14-pound frozen turkey, celery, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, and Idaho potatoes.

Virtua aims to help people be well, get well, and stay well – and eating well is an essential component of that mission. Virtua’s Eat Well initiative furthers that goal by supporting nutrition as the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. By creating reliable and affordable sources for nutritious food, Virtua is helping to create communities of wellness that demonstrate the impact a balanced diet can have on the health of an individual, a family, and entire neighborhoods.

The Eat Well umbrella of programs includes the Mobile Grocery Store, Mobile Farmers Market, and two Food Farmacies that provide free food and nutrition counseling to enrolled patient-participants. These philanthropy-driven initiatives are part of Virtua’s innovative efforts to improve health through better nutrition, reduce diet-related chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, and to fight food insecurity.

Earlier this week, N.J. Governor Phil Murphy committed over $5.5M to strengthen food access in Atlantic City. Starting soon, Virtua’s Mobile Grocery Store will add regular stops in Atlantic City to its schedule.
