CASE UPDATE: Brian K. Barnes, age 42, of Glassboro

CASE UPDATE:

GLASSBORO, NJ --On November 9, 2023, a continued investigation by the GCPO and Glassboro Police Department resulted in the arrest of Brian K. Barnes, 42, of Glassboro, N.J., who was identified as having been involved in a dispute with Sidney Garcia on October 20, 2023 which resulted in the exchange of gunfire between the two. During that exchange, Barnes was wounded. Brian Barnes and Garcia were well known to each other.  Barnes was charged as follows: 

 

Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon (2nd Degree)

Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (2nd Degree)

Receiving Stolen Property (3rd Degree)

 

Subsequent to processing post-arrest, Barnes was released on a Complaint Summons pending future court proceedings. 

 

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of their rights as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State Law.

 

 

CASE HISTORY:

 

On Friday, October 20, 2023, Glassboro Police responded to a residence on South Academy Street for a shooting. Officers discovered Sidney Garcia (05-02-1982) in the backyard of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. Garcia was transported by Gloucester County EMS to Inspira Hospital – Mullica Hill, where he succumbed from his injuries.  

 

During the initial investigation, Detectives determined that Garcia was shot during an exchange of gunfire with another Glassboro resident. As a result of the shooting, the Glassboro resident was also shot during the exchange of gunfire, but survived his injuries.  

 

A review of the cause of death as well as the actions leading up to it is being conducted jointly by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and the Glassboro Police Department.
