Camden County, N.J.- A nationwide trend has been impacting New Jersey in recent months, where thieves are targeting Hyundai and Kia vehicles due to a viral social media challenge that provides step-by-step instructions for thieves looking to capitalize on their anti-theft vulnerabilities, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay.

The target of these thefts are Hyundai and Kia vehicles, lacking push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices. Approximately 540,000 Hyundais and Kias are currently registered in New Jersey, and approximately 143,000 of them are affected by the security vulnerabilities.

Due to exposed safety vulnerabilities, Hyundais and Kias have been the targets of 19% of auto thefts in New Jersey this year. Auto thefts in New Jersey have decreased compared to 2022, but the security vulnerabilities of Hyundais and Kias make this job more difficult.

Please learn if your vehicle is eligible for the free anti-theft technology upgrade and help us pump the brakes on auto theft. Owners of eligible vehicles are encouraged to contact Hyundai toll-free at (800) 633-5151 or Kia toll-free at (800) 333-4542 for information on the FREE technology fix.

Please watch this informative video for public awareness to address the growing concern regarding Hyundai and Kia auto theft in our communities Hyundai Kia Theft Explainer. This initiative will amplify awareness around this issue and empower vehicle owners to take proactive measures. This video outlines the inherent risks associated with this trend and urges eligible vehicle owners to promptly contact Hyundai and Kia to better protect themselves.
