New State Standard for Drinking Water Causes Problems for Westville Residents and Officials

WESTVILLE, NJ (August 30, 2023)(CNBNews)--Last week, a notice was sent to residents of Westville about the borough's water department being cited by the state of New Jersey for violating a new drinking water standard. Most residents received the alert on Friday.

The warning stated that the borough's water system exceeded the MCL for Pefluorononanoic Acid PFNA in the second quarter of 2023, resulting in a violation of a new state standard for drinking water. The alert cautioned that individuals who consume water with PFNA levels above the MCL for an extended period may experience liver, kidney, or immune system issues, and males may have reproductive system problems. Excessive consumption of PFNA by females could cause developmental delays in a fetus or infant.

Westville officials held a meeting on Monday to address the issue. One official reassured the public that there was no need to worry that a plan is in place to address the situation, although it will take some time. While individuals can choose to purchase drinking water, it is not necessary, according to the official. A copy of the full notice is below.

The Westville Borough Council declared a damaged water main beneath the rail tracks at state Route 45 and Olive Street an emergency in July. This allowed officials to quickly repair the century-old pipe. On July 2, Public Works Director Donna Domico detected the broken pipe after it had released an estimated 100,000 gallons of water, and promptly shut it off. As a consequence, only one pipe is now supplying water to the southwest area of Westville and neighboring parts of West Deptford reported NJ.com
