Route 42 northbound lane closures Thursday

to shift traffic as Missing Moves advances in Gloucester and Camden counties

Benigno Boulevard interchange ramps to be closed and detoured overnight

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced lane closures on Route 42 northbound Thursday night in two different work zones, as the I-295/Route 42 Missing Moves project advances in Deptford, Gloucester County and Bellmawr, Camden County. In addition, the Route 42 northbound ramp to Benigno Boulevard and the Benigno Boulevard ramp to Route 42 northbound will be closed and detoured tonight.

Route 42 northbound Mileposts 12.5 to 12.8

Beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 27, until 6 a.m. Friday, July 28, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to close the two right lanes on Route 42 northbound just before Route 55 merges with Route 42 in Deptford, Gloucester County. The lane closures are necessary to implement a traffic shift. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained overnight. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays.

By 6 a.m., Friday, July 28, Route 42 northbound will be split with a work zone in the middle of the roadway. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained to the left of the work zone, and one lane will be maintained to the right of the work zone. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until the end of the summer.

Route 42 northbound Mileposts 13.5 to 14

Beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 27, until 6 a.m. Friday, July 28, a single lane on Route 42 northbound will be closed just before Leaf Avenue in Bellmawr, Camden County. Construction is expected to start in the left lane and move to the right as work progress. The lane closures are necessary to implement a traffic shift. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained overnight. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays.

By 6 a.m., Friday, July 28, traffic on Route 42 northbound will be shifted to the left towards the newly constructed median. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until the end of the summer.

Benigno Boulevard Ramp Closures

In addition, the Route 42 northbound and Benigno Avenue ramps are scheduled to be closed overnight on Thursday, July 27 at the same times. The following detours will be in place:

Route 42 northbound Exit 14 ramp to Benigno Avenue:

  • Motorists on Route 42 northbound wishing to take the Exit 14 ramp to CR 753/Creek Road/Bellmawr will be directed to continue on Route 42 northbound, which becomes I-76 westbound
  • Take Exit 1C to Route 130 southbound
  • Turn left onto Market Street
  • Turn right to take the ramp to I-295/Route 42/Atlantic City Expressway
  • Continue on I-76 eastbound, which becomes Route 42 southbound
  • Take Exit 14 to CR 753/Creek Road/Bellmawr
  • Turn right onto Harding Avenue
  • Turn right onto Creek Road/CR 753
  • Turn right onto Wellwood Road, which becomes Leaf Avenue
  • Turn right onto Benigno Avenue

Benigno Avenue ramp to Route 42 northbound:

  • Motorists on Benigno Avenue wishing to take the ramp to Route 42 northbound will be directed to Route 168/North Black Horse Pike southbound
  • Turn right onto Route 41/West Clements Bridge Road southbound
  • Stay right to take the ramp to CR 544 westbound to Route 42 northbound/Woodbury/Camden
  • Take the ramp to Route 42 northbound

The $180 million federally funded project will build new ramps connecting Route 42 northbound to I-295 southbound, and I-295 northbound to Route 42 southbound in order to allow for the direct movement of traffic between the two roadways. These are commonly known as the “missing moves.” The project will also include the demolition and reconstruction of the Creek Road Bridge over I-295 between Route 42 and Almonesson Road. The majority of the project will be built off of the roadways and will have minimal impact on traffic on Route 42 and I-295. The project is expected to be completed in late 2023.

Variable Message Signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
