HADDON HTS., NJ-- On July 2, 2023, Richard "Ping" Sheldon passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Gloucester City, Ping graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School before attending Gloucester Catholic High School Class of 1954 where he was an outstanding baseball player and played for the Brooklawn American Legion team. After high school, he played with the Philadelphia Phillies farm system for several years. He attended several universities before receiving his real estate appraisal and insurance MAI. After marrying his wife, Helen "Woodsy" Brennan in 1958, he served in the US Army / Army reserves after the Korean War. After marrying and moving to Haddon Heights, he opened Richard S. Sheldon, Incorporated in Haddon Heights which he owned and operated until his retirement.
Ping served on many local boards, including Haddon Savings Bank and chaired several professional organizations. He was also a member and past Gloucester City Rotary Club president. He was an avid golfer and a member of Tavistock Country Club for almost 50 years.
Ping is lovingly survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen "Woodsy" Sheldon; his 9 children, Mary Ruth Kane (Bob), Maureen (Bill), Jeanne Gans (Paul, late George Gans), Katheen Sheehan (Tim), Susan, Eileen, Dan, Casey (Melissa) and Colleen Barrett (Dave); 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Heim (late Walt Heim), Kathleen Genzano (Ernie, late Mickey Narducci); and Mary Sheldon Dolente (late Roger Dolente) along with many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements under the Healey Funeral Home, 9 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, NJ. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 12:00 PM at St. Rose of Lima Church, 4th Avenue and Kings Highway, Haddon Heights. Private Interment New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr, NJ.
