I-76 lane closures required in both directions tonight as bridge deck project advances in Gloucester City, Camden County

Closures necessary to perform traffic shift

(Trenton) (July 21, 2023)(CNBNews)--–I-76 is scheduled to have lane closures tonight between mile posts 0.76 and 1.89 as the I-76 Bridge over Klemm Avenue rehabilitation project advances in Gloucester City, Camden County.

Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, July 21, until 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, July 22, lane closures will be required on I-76 in both directions. Work is expected to begin on the eastbound side before moving to the westbound side. The closures are necessary to shift traffic to the right onto the newly constructed eastbound bridge deck and to reposition construction barrier to create a median work zone. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, four lanes in each direction will be open on the bridge.

In addition, beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, July 24, the number of lanes in each direction will be adjusted daily using a moveable barrier. For a video showing how the moveable barrier works, click here. The following configurations are expected to be in place daily for approximately five weeks:

Morning rush hour lane configuration:
6 lanes westbound into Philadelphia (2 on west side of work zone, 4 on east side of work zone)

3 lanes eastbound

Evening rush hour lane configuration:

4 lanes westbound into Philadelphia

5 lanes eastbound

The $57.2 million project will replace the I-76 Bridge over Klemm Avenue, Conrail and the South Branch Newton Creek Bridge. In addition, the project will replace the noise walls on the bridge and on the approach roadway, as well overhead sign structures. Improvements will be made to ramps, drainage, lighting, and ITS components within the project limits. I-76 carries an average of 200,000 vehicles each day. To minimize the impact to traffic and reduce the construction time, the bridge replacement will be done in stages using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods using prefabricated materials. The project is expected to be completed in the fall 2023.
