But though the oppressive heat weighs on our brains and taxes our bodies, it is the price we pay for being allowed to spend time outdoors … and it has its one singular consolation: our summer evenings. Planning/Zoning Board to Decide if Cannabis Store Should Open at former O'Donnells Bar

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNews Editor CNBNews photo files GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (June 21, 2023)(CNBNews)--Tonight, Wednesday, June 21, the Gloucester City Planning/Zoning Board will meet to decide on some different requests, including allowing marijuana to be sold from the former O'Donnells' Family restaurant/bar at 401 North Broadway. For those new to Gloucester City, the O'Donnell family opened their doors in 1923 and sold it in 2009. The popular eatery was known for its Manhattan clam chowder, seafood, rye bread baked at Mosteig's Bakery, and ice cream cake roll. The small bar was usually crowded; it was "tucked" away on the side of a building near Warren Street. Many customers would travel near and far to drink an O'Donnell Manhattan cocktail made with secret ingredients. Since that time, the business has changed hands numerous times. The building and the surrounding parking lot have been empty for two years. In 2021... Read more →

American Legion: The MIO Booker Combat Vehicle

1. For the first time in decades, the Army is fielding a new capability to support infantry units: the M10 Booker Combat Vehicle. The service unveiled the vehicle this week at the Pentagon in a briefing to reporters. The M10, which took four years to select and procure, resembles something between a Soviet BMP-2 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle and a small Abrams tank. Named for two soldiers who died in combat but might have survived with heavier support, the M10 will deploy to help infantry brigades start or finish fights on the battlefields of the 21st century. It is part of a larger push to update how the Army travels to combat, and fights when there. 2. China has been operating a spy base in Cuba since at least 2019, part of a global effort by Beijing to upgrade its intelligence-gathering capabilities, according to a Biden administration official. The official,... Read more →

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

Where Has All The Money Gone?

Dorothy Philbin | CNBNews GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (JUNE 19, 2023)(CNBNews)--It seems that everyone, every company, city and state is filing for bankruptcy. Just this week there have been bankruptcy sales at Bye, Bye Baby, Harmon Cosmetics, Bed Bath and Beyond, and David's Bridal. They are just the companies in the Deptford Mall area. Let's move onto cities. Just the top 10 are New York City, Chicago, Honolulu, Portland, New Orleans, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Miami. It shouldn't be any surprise that most of these cities are in trouble, they have either defunded their police departments or are being over-run by illegal immigrants. Moving on to state pension plans. Get ready. Only two states, South Dakota and Wisconsin, have fully-funded pension plans. The other 48 states are in trouble. The most under-funded state pension plan is...you've got it. New Jersey! The next six are Illinois, Hawaii, Alaska, New Mexico,... Read more →
