Saturday, May 27, 2023
Lower Township Police Department Detective Sergeant Michael Perry graduated the prestigious New Jersey State Association of Chiefs’ of Police (NJSACOP) Command and Leadership Academy on May 25, 2023.
NJSACOP’s mission is to promote and enhance the highest ethical and professional standards in law enforcement at all levels throughout New Jersey.
In recognizing the challenges in law enforcement during the upcoming decades, the NJSACOP has made a commitment to be in the forefront of innovation and change. The primary component of that commitment is the development of future police leaders.
In 1993, NJSACOP officials traveled to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to work with the Academy's Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership to adapt the fabled West Point model of command and leadership to the needs of law enforcement.
The result of this collaboration is the NJSACOP Command & Leadership Academy, a unique blend of theory and application. Candidates with the greatest leadership potential are selected for this highly competitive program from municipal, county, state, and federal agencies from throughout the region.
Candidates with the greatest leadership potential are selected for this highly competitive program from municipal, county, state, and federal agencies from throughout the region, according to the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. For a program of this caliber, law enforcement professionals who are selected make more than a casual commitment; it is an intensive, demanding 13 plus week in-person course that will pay dividends for the participant and his or her agency for a lifetime. The curricula — following the leadership training that West Point cadets receive their junior year — focuses on four key areas: becoming a leader, motivating individual personnel, leading groups and managing environmental factors and outside influences, according to Paul Sorrentino, the academy’s program director.
